Re: Doing a cutout this weekend

If it were me I would mount a ledge to put the box on the wall at entrance height, since you will be doing the cutout on a ladder. Otherwise you will be going up and down the ladder a bunch. And I'm...

    Re: Keeping Combe straight tricks

Gotcha, I thought the thread was going down the path of what to do to keep comb straight in the honey stores.

    Re: Keeping Combe straight tricks

Dang! Kind of defeats on the main purposes of a top bar if you put in that much foundation.

    Re: Would like to feedback

Probably not. Artificial insemination is generally used for breeder queens. It is possible that the queen was artificially inseminated, but it was probably just an early queen, or just a small queen.

    Re: Robbing sucks....

I've made my robber screens so they can go out the sides. Seems to be effective. And they can haul out the garbage pretty easy. It amazes me that something that simple would work.
  8. Re: Won a blue ribbon at the fair for our honey!

    Awesome!
  9. Re: Wanting to build TBH for next year - Q's on construction material

I was the same way starting out. I would love to have pretty peaked roofs and nice stained boxes, but in a couple years they will look pretty rough.

    Re: Keeping Combe straight tricks

I have found that when they are strong and on a good flow building comb for stores it is very challenging if you don't go in often. When they are small it is hard to screw up, just don't let them get...

    Re: Keeping Combe straight tricks

Good comb guides help the most.
  12. Re: Wanting to build TBH for next year - Q's on construction material

I would stay away from plywood mainly due to chemicals in the glue and the likelihood that it will fail sooner, but other than that you can use just about anything. If you are getting free wood of...

Re: get the bees off the comb

I'm going to harvest some this weekend, I'm ready for a cool down, but hopefully not 40 F. :-)

Re: get the bees off the comb

Yes, a top bar nuc, just a place to set the honey bar aside while either getting more honey or closing up the hive. I have a bunch of top bar nucs. You could put it in a bucket if you like, but...
  15. Re: Fall flow predictions for south east

All flows are local. I noticed tonight that the Wingstem (or yellow crownbeard, depending on were you are from) is about my height in the full sun by my house. No blooms, but this seems a little...

Re: get the bees off the comb

I've seen videos of folks clearing suppers with a leaf blower. I was thinking of trying my wet dry vac on blow. My leaf blower would be to unwieldy to use and I don't have any volunteers in the house...

    Re: Kroger Bees

Mostly luck. The upshot was it didn't take very long. I would have loved to have been able to save some brood, but it would have been a mess since it would have been in the cavity of the blocks.

Re: Did you stick with top bar?

Lots of time they are free, since I will use free wood. Of course they are free like open source software. Open source software is free if your time is worth nothing!

Re: Did you stick with top bar?

Every time I have to purchase or assemble frames I realize how much I really love my top bars! Ten frames with foundation is a little over 30 dollars for me. I figure my bars cost me something like...

    Re: Kroger Bees

Quick update, I wasn't sure what to do with the bees. I knew it was a decent amount of bees, but I needed to go through them to see what I had. I figured if it was not as much as I thought I would...

estreya, what I do is I pick up a couple bars at once, sometimes three and move them together.

Re: Did you stick with top bar?

Yes, I want to make queens when I want to make queens, not when the bees want to make queens! :)

Re: Did you stick with top bar?

I have both. I don't mind Langs, but even building my boxes they are more expensive for me to keep. I started with a Lang and went to TBHs. I setup some Langs this year because I want to raise queens...
