    Re: Insulation or Not-For Winter

Hello Biermann. I manage ventilation on my hives last year my ensuring the upper entrance notch was open to allow moisture to escape. I have also used popsicle sticks in each corner to allow
    air...

    Re: Insulation or Not-For Winter

I used two inches of rigid foam insulation on all my hives last year. This year I am going to make and use some quilt boxes to try and gauge any difference in their success.

    As stated above,...
  3. Re: Preventing swarm or killing potential queen?

I read somewhere that around 65% of all packages end up superceding the queen that came with the package.

Also, I had a first year hive from a package swarm this time last year. There is no...

    Re: When to stop supering?

I would put another super on just in case. You can monitor it to see if it gets any activity. If not take it off before you get the hives ready for winter.

    Re: cant find the queen

You don't really have to find her except for your own piece of mind. The fact that you have eggs tells you that she was there within three days and busy laying.

I am only a second year beek and it...

    Re: how many supers

I allow for 3 supers per hive. SOme will use all 3 while others will use more or less. I have found the number 3 as a livable number of supers. That way you don't have to many to store and you...

Re: everything that could go wrong...

Sorry about your losses. It gets discouraging to loose one hive let alone two. I lost one recently to small hive beetles and was very upset and felt like a failure. But figured out that there will be...

Re: Small cluster of bees on the ground?

That would be my experience as well. If they are balled up in front of the hive somewhere, there is a queen in the middle. Pick it up and carefully place back into the hive.

    Re: Queen Excluder or "Not"

My experience with excluders is exactly what has been said here. If your supers contain undrawn comb, they will not work it. And no honey will you get!

I figure it will be easier to strain the...

    Re: Screened Bottom Boards

Very nice woodworking. I too have taken on building SBBs, hive stands, inner and outter covers. I can build them for a lot cheaper than I can buy them. The only thing I cannot undercut by
    building...

    Re: SBB

You put the plastic insert back in when it starts getting cooler in the evenings. Around here it will be sometime in September. It helps keep the warmth the hive creates in.

Re: #8 Hardware cloth...where to buy it?

I concur with amazon. Usually a better price than local hardware stores and if you are a Prime member, it's at your home in two days free. Good luck

    Re: Beeyard Aerial View

Cool idea for a thread. I can't add mine yet because the last time google earth took a picture from space there was nothing but trees where my apiary is now.

Re: Is this a poplar seedling ?

Because I am bored I will answer with a third yes. I have planted two of them in my backyard for my bees. I also have one that is over 50' tall next to the bee yard they love.

  22. Re: Slatted bottom board must work - but does it matter?

I have 7 hives. The only one that has ever swarmed is the one that I do not have one on (twice). I am a believer in using them. I know others will disagree in their validity.

    I think they help...

Re: Less small hive beetles this year?

I personally have seen more this year. I just lost a hive that was run off by the no good buggers. I hope this isn't a trend.

Currently using escape boards. Will be trying the fume boards in the future.
  25. Re: Small Hive Beetles have major advantages over the bees in the assault of the hive

I hate the SHB. I just lost a strong feral hive from a cutout, that somehow became infested. There were so many bees I had them in two deeps with some of their original comb and
    undrawn comb. The...
