Interesting , it seems in most cases covering the hives helps . I had thought about it in terms of heat conservation , not so much about wind block but it makes sense , if the wind blows the bees...
I guess this question would apply more to the northern beek's as they suffer a much harsher winter . For those of you that had a winter loss that you can attribute atleast partially to weather ( we...
I have not used it personally but have seen several mentions here and other places where its a hit or miss thing as far as the bees accepting HBH . I would think ( just my opinion) that because they...
I just finished doing my 2 week inspection on my first ever hives. I found lots of un-capped clear and brownish liquid , I am guessing that was honey and syrup . I found what I think is capped brood...
Hived my first ever packages 2 weeks ago tomorrow . I want to do a more thorough inspection tomorrow or sunday if the weather lets me and want to know just what I should be looking for at this point ?
I just installed 4 packages on 4-27 and have done one check so far just to check that the queens were out ok . i read alot on here about building nucs to help with winter losses and it seems that mid...
Mine are eating about 1 to 1 1/2 pints one the bad weather days and one quart a day on the warmer nice days
cobutterfly , I am a member of the 4 corners beekeepers and we had this gentleman post this to our site . We are in no way affiliated with him , but he may be able to help you I hope
Hello...
When you see a good supply of pollen coming into the hives , does that indicate that many of the seemingly empty bees coming in are bringing in nectar?
Only issue I see is what will you do to reduce the entrance ? Even with nucs instead of packages wont you want to reduce the entrance for a couple weeks or so?
I am in zone 4 and have lots of western sand cherry and lilac that both bloom early and heavy . Neither is an evergreen though .
there are a couple of plans for nucs in the DIY section . They can be mediums . I would make them to fit your existing set-up , whatever that may be , so you have total interchangability.
Did you really mean to say " expand as much as possible" or did you mean as much as possible while still leaving the parent colony strong? Sorry if that is an obvious question to those of you who are...
Opened my hives today for a quick look around . I released the queens 4 days ago after installing the packages 7 days ago . While looking in the hives I found pollen and syrup that I have been...
What may also help you is to warm up the syrup in the warmest part of the day when the bees are likely to be a bit more active then say at 7 am . If the syrup stays below about 50 degrees they wont...
Are those the D. Coates nuc boxes?
the saying goes ....a pint is a pound so you can just use a measuring cup. It works out pretty close , close enough for the girls anyways . When I made up one to one I just used hot tap water . It...
Its Bee insurance . If anything were to happen to the queen the colony would be prepared to make another .
:D:thumbsup: That story paints quite a picture !!!! I am sure my turn is coming
Congrats on your install . I did mine today also , never realized how many bees fit in that small cage !!!
Laketrout , my queens came in cages without candy plugs and not knowing how long the packages had been made up I did not think a quick release like a marshmellow plug was a good idea . Is my thinking...
Hived my first ever bees today . Wow what an experience !! I have been watching you tube vids till I have most of them memorized now . I went down to hive 4 packages this afternoon and was feeling...
I have 4 packages that are supposed to be here saturday . I cant wait to get started !!
I agree with the above posters , just requeen to try to get better dispositon but dont dispose of the other bees , you will need them to raise the new brood from the new queen
