  1. Re: switching to natural/ 4.9 cell size input?

I've been doing small cell since 2000-2002. I would recommend if your going to go to 8 frame mediums to do it now rather than later things get tougher the longer you put them off. That choice is...

Strachans's have good queens but I found that they didn't survive -30F very well. Actually most califonian queens are pretty good they just don't like northern winters. I have Palmer stock and...

    Dadant hive

Are there any US beekeepers using the dadant hive on a commercial level?

    Re: nine frame brood chamber?

If the bees like 10 frames, why do they leave the ones at the sides empty and move up.

    reply:

Because they wanted to. Think your confusing comb spacing with broodnest expansion which are two...

    Re: nine frame brood chamber?

Ask this to bees not people. They will quickly tell you that nine frame spacing is not what they want in the brood chamber. 10 frames is actually maximum spacing that most stocks would want. 11...

Re: cross wire or pinning deeps

I wire everything that I use wax foundation with. Pins just don't cut it in my book. I also modify my frames to use 5 horizontal wires. Get a pair of wire crimpers they are your friend and there...

Re: Heard a taLL tail. Is it true?

I could believe 100-150 pound average. This with a 3 deep broodnest and the 3rd deep being a food chamber full of stores for winter with bees that don't need feeding for winter. 500 pounds hmmm. ...

    Re: Palmerized hive

Just a regular 10 frame deep box with a divider down the middle. Can use 2x4 if you want 10 frame space or 3/4" board if you want 9 frame spacing. 14711 From picture you can see I dado'ed a 1.5...
  13. Re: package bees - small cell in the Northwest

I Just marvel at the passion about such a minor element of bee keeping!

    reply:

A queen brooding up her nest is at the heart of beekeeping to me. So a queen pumping an extra 10-15% bees over...
  14. Re: package bees - small cell in the Northwest

I'm curious about the assumption that smaller bees winter better because of a more compact cluster. How do we know this is true?

Re: Mixing bee races with new hives

Try them all nothing like experience to teach you. They will all manage a little different. For example russains will likely teach better swarm control, ect.
  17. Re: package bees - small cell in the Northwest

I've been doing small cell (hate calling it that) since 2000 before the foundation was available on the market as I had gotten a foundation mill. Don't get caught up looking for small cell bees. ...
  18. Re: What we do with the 1/2 frame QR frames when finished grafting for the season

This is how I am wintering 4 way nucs. 14590 14590 From the pics you can see I built a dummy divider instead of a feeder as some use (I don't like division board feeders). End of season keep one...

    Re: bees all gone

You can try putting a queen excluder under the bottom box and on on the bottom board to keep the queen in. This sometomes helps hold them in place for next time.
