    Re: Small Cell Mite Counts

I think small cell helps, doesn't mean that it's a silver bullet for varroa. I believe that genetics plays a big role as well.

Re: Received Queens with dead attendents

I would do the same. Make the nuc now and introduce her later this evening. It doesn't take but a couple hours for a nuc to realize they are queenless.

    Re: Foundationless for new Beekeeper

I agree with brettj777. Wedge top frames and most importantly, a level hive. I have melted a little wax and "painted" the wedge to encourage them to not draw it perpendicular.

Re: Hive check - lots of drones

I still have some hives that had frames of drone brood. Not worried about it, they know better than I. And no I don't have a drone layer, still packed with worker bees.

    Re: Time to reQueen?

What's wrong with the queen you have currently? Personally I don't pinch queens unless there is a good reason to. If you really want to then I would wait until spring. It's getting to be too late...

Re: watched one of my hives go this morning

Were you feeding? Were they honey bound? Did they have open or capped brood?
  9. Re: How to be competitive when the competition iis priced too low?

It depends on what system of measure you are using. Most beekeepers use weight to sell honey (ie Lb or pound). Some people see by ounces (oz), but is is avoirdupois(avdp) or fluid oz? So, 12 fluid...

At $5 a Lb I'd buy your's all day too!

Re: Need some advice if you have time

I would take everything that i consider a honey super. For me that means I leave 3 mediums and anything over that I extract. I will put them back on wet and see what else I can get. If they seem...

    Re: Honey Pricing

I'v been buying 12oz jars and filling on a scale to a pound. Does anyone sell in half pint and pint jars? Just thinking it might be easier to get than buying bulk 12oz jars. Do you notice more...

    Honey Pricing

I know it's very local, but wondering what people are selling their honey for this year (retail)? Did you increase prices from last year? Just like to see what everyone else is doing.

Re: Introducing a Queen to a Nuc

Also, I like to wait at least 2 hours on a small nuc, longer for bigger hives. I would also wait a little longer if I moved them. If you install a queen and can easily move the bees off the cage,...

Re: Introducing a Queen to a Nuc

Did you introduce her the first time right after you made the nuc?
  17. Re: Bee-n, a while since I posted. latest inspection with pics

Yeah, hard to see on a phone screen.
  18. Re: Bee-n, a while since I posted. latest inspection with pics

You can always try a split. Worst case is you recombine if either side fails. I'm not sure about your area and wintering but a nuc would work well to split and get virgin mated. I would think you...
  19. Re: Bee-n, a while since I posted. latest inspection with pics

Looks like a queen cup not a cell, I can't see any larva in there. If it's empty, it's fine.
  20. Re: Thought's on enough time for them to draw

I was thinking along the same lines. Thanks for the input.
  21. Thought's on enough time for them to draw

So I have one that is packed, 5 mediums high and queen laying up into the 4th medium. I have another 2 medium hive with mated queen, she has only been laying for a couple weeks. I have a 5 frame...

    Re: Propolis Honey

It's just honey that is infused with propolis. I bought some from a guy a long time ago that was very dark and don't recall how he made it. I was hoping someone knew how.

    Propolis Honey

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has made propolis honey and if so how do you make it? Thanks!
