JW - congratulations. Report back when you have a day like ours today. The sky alternated sun and grey clouds, they got grumpy, and probably took 150 stings total for the day. You can work up to it....

Re: Building my own Honey Extractor

The sweet spot is determined by your uncapping and loading/unloading time. If the cycle time on the extractor is 20 minutes, how many frames can you uncap in 20 minutes? If you can unload/uncap/load...

Re: Bees attack dark skinned people?

We work our bees with exposed forearms. That only works if the hairs on your arms are too short to trap a bee. A full suit would solve that problem for your friend.

Our Bee Lady sent me to Beltsville, contact Bart Smith, who refered me to Roger Simonds, 704 833-1525 of the AMS, USDA.

Yes, they may have been robbed, but that should be easy to determine by...

The "slop" was yellow today for the first time. The scale hive crawled it's way back up to balanced, and should gain tomorrow.

We have often seen the strongest hives hit first and worst with poison. My guess is the effected area was more distant.

DO NOT PUT the dead bees in alcohol. Freeze them in a plastic bag and find...

I buy a pallet(2,500 lbs) of 50 lb beet sugar for slightly less than at Aldi's. The big advantage is that I save alot of time opening bags. It would be even cheaper in a cloth bag, but then I would...

Be very wary of any burlap for decorating purposes. My sister gifted me quite a few rolls that made us rather sick in a short time. Our guess was it had some sort of flame retardant on it.

Hmmm. Maybe the bees are trying to tell you something. Try an old fashioned wooden frame with wax foundation. It does not matter what you like, only what they like.

Re: Is CO2 the best way to kill a hive?

If you purchase a MATED queen, there is no need to kill the bees. The old "mean" drones will not have a chance to mated and carry on their genes.

Remember, it's "Beekeeper" , not "Beekiller"

Re: Is CO2 the best way to kill a hive?

If you are not raising queens, there is no need to kill the bees, just kill the queen.

In the past, the only time bees where gassed was AFB. Mean hives where requeened.
