Re: U.S./Canadian honeybee open border issues

JodieToadie I don't know the answer to the costs. Like any other part of farming, if you knew the cost, you would be better off working for the county.

Sorry for the mistake JodieToadie. Could you itemize the overwintering expenses that add up to $65.00?

If its convenient, do it for free. No agreement. No paperwork. It will work out fine. It's a karma builder.

Bingo Jodie. I don't need the neighbors being beekeepers.

Ian and Allan I understand where both of you are coming from. All I can say is I don't mind it the way it is.

    Re: Inspiration to keep going

I don't mind paying 50$ more to keep it the way it is. If more bees were available the seed companies would just pay less pollination fees so it would be a wash.

    Re: Inspiration to keep going

I have an agreement with my accountant. She doesn't keep bees and I don't keep books. It works out just fine. I always know when I'm out of money because the bank will send a letter every time.

    Re: Inspiration to keep going

Well if you love the no risk no reward words then I think you should borrow all the money that you can and get as big as you can as fast as you can. If I were you I would strive for 1000 hives to...

CWoods, what is the name of the commercial operation that you worked for?
  18. Re: "17 billion honey bees injured, killed...", Article featuring Kim Flottum.

So how many dead hives would it take before you would've decided to get the honey tested? Did you put the bees near the corn field or did the farmer plant corn in your back yard?
  19. Re: "17 billion honey bees injured, killed...", Article featuring Kim Flottum.

In Canada we use a book that lists all pesticide tank mixes that are allowed with each individual product. I have a hard time believing this statement.

    Directions on pesticide labels generally...

Andrew, if what you say is true maybe you could give us more details. What was the tank mix?

  22. Re: "...Neonicotinoid Insecticides in Wetlands of Canada." Paper in PLOSOne.

I am assuming the numbers are true. Why wouldn't the researcher find these chemicals? In the end what does it mean for the beekeeper? Are the levels too high? Are they very low? What is...

    I don't think a gram is a volume measurement.

I read the report and I am surprised the levels are that low.

I heard that she aquired most of her experience studying the wetlands of SE Alberta before she moved east.
