  1. Re: Outer Cover - Experience with LeakSeal or similar in lieu of alulminum

My guess is that you will spend a lot more time and money replacing whatever you paint on the telescoping cover in lieu of the sheet aluminum/metal.

    Re: winter wrap test

Frank - all good points, it is just a lot of work to answer those questions with a useful level or accuracy, so most people (like myself) make an educated guess as to the benefits.

    Re: winter wrap test

A healthy colony in good equipment with proper food stores does not need to be wrapped to survive the winter in most of the lower 48 States.

The only possible advantage I can see to proper...

Re: Rearing queens for a small operation

I am another hobbyist with about a dozen hives hoping to raise my own queens this year. In other words, after doing some research I think the following should work for a small-timer like me, but...
  6. Re: Doolittle's paddle for that "scolding" bee

Great for dealing with all sorts of stinging insects in unwanted places like wasps in the house. It would work for scolding bees, too, I would imagine:

I, too, have a strong interest in Master beekeeping courses, but none are offered in my area. I would also be interested to hear if anyone has any experience with this online course at U of M they...

Re: Spring OAV treatment in NorCal?

Is that really true specifically for OA? How could the mites adapt to having their mouth parts burned off? Put another way, how could bison ever adapt to being driven off a cliff?

    Also, in...
  10. Re: Ag commissioner of Ventura county forces bee hive to move! Help needed

What the heck is "etremely high bee activity"? What the heck is "safe distance"?

This ordinance has so many undefined terms it is unenforceable due to being arbitrary and further deprives the...

Re: Treatment free, is it really that easy

Roland and Astrobee - sounds like one of you had good results with the VSH queens and the other did not. Which, is quite common in the beekeeping world where a certain type of queen works well for...

Re: Treatment free, is it really that easy

I checked both links referenced post #363. You report you have two VSH hives and they both produced a good honey crop this year. . . correct? Sounds encouraging. Can you tell us how much honey...

    Re: Record Keeping

We get about 16" of rain/snow a year in my location, and the paper shows no signs of reaching its water exposure limit. I point this out because that is probably drier than most parts of North...

Re: Treatment free, is it really that easy

Astrobee - When asking for such detail, it seems only fair that you respond in kind, including your honey yields for your VSH queens since that is Roland's point. Thanks.

    Re: Record Keeping

I like to keep records for my 14-odd hives. I think some of us more OCD types, like myself, need to be careful to not get too carried away with keeping records, though. After a certain point,...

  19. Re: Oxalic Acid ... soon approved for use in beehives

There's lots of anecdotal evidence on this forum that OA is safe for the bees and effective against mites.

Most studies of OA use focused on the dribble method, where most hobby beeks seem to...

Re: Treating mites during honey flow

Not many options for treating for mites with honey supers on. I've...
  21. Re: Swarm control - Demaree preferred over Checkerboarding?

It is my understanding in the Demaree method that some of the brood is below the queen excluder, and some/most of the brood is above the QE. In effect, the Demaree method changes the distribution of...

Re: hives on someone else's property?

This sounds like the typical outyard arrangement to me, meaning trading a nuc and then working it for him for access is too high a price.

And, then, he wants you to build his woodenware for him....

Re: Treatment free, is it really that easy

This sounds like a fair question, to me.

And I just figured the answer is, that, VSH queens overall aren't much better than most any other well bred queen which is properly suited for the local...
