Re: You can't get rid of beetles by destroying hives...

Quite some professional beekeepers and hobbyists from Germany winter their bees in South Italy, and the biggest importer of package bees into Germany has it's apiaries right down in Calabria. He has...
  2. Re: Bee Forage Crude Protien and AA Breakdown

Also we have the knowledge, that bees like any other living thing doesn't live on an island. It is embedded into a web of life and strongly depends on that web. Deknow collected a lot of it, about...
  3. Re: Bee Forage Crude Protien and AA Breakdown

Someone elses posted this video recently. As long it is winter take your time and watch this. It might be well worth watching it very carefully. I reckon the video is related to this topic.

Re: Rearing queens for a small operation

I recommend to beginners the MDA splitter method with great results. Can't be easier with results that are repeatable and produces good queens.

Re: Spring OAV treatment in NorCal?

In Spring. That's only valid for spring treatments, simply there has no work been done on it. There is only one German study, that looks at buildup when using it continuously from April through July....

  10. Re: Jon Entine debunks theory linking neonic pesticides to honeybee collapse

I am working with oil seed rape farmers. Last year the difference with bees present is +15 %. Usually around +20 %.

So while oil seed rape doesn't need bee pollination, it certainly makes a...
  11. Re: Jon Entine debunks theory linking neonic pesticides to honeybee collapse

The only reason why colony numbers are rising in Europe is because the the European government comes with a lot of bureaucracy and they started to count hives in countries, where no counting took...

    Re: walt wright's checkerboarding

I tried entrances above the queen excluder. Too much pollen in the honey supers! Honey had too much water. Also the broodnest is the honey pump, so the honey better goes right through the broodnest....

Re: Spring OAV treatment in NorCal?

    1. Oxalic acid has a half life of two weeks, so it stays at least a month in the hive.
    2. Oxalic acid does accumulate in open nectar cells and is preserved within the nectar and honey (or winter...

Re: Treatment free, is it really that easy

Just one thing: me thinks Carnolians are the weakest bees - weak in resisting varroas - that I ever came across. There is a huge varroa resistance breeding program for Carnolians in Germany and I did...

A friend of mine went treatment free, by bringing in into his apiary as different bee genetics as was possible to him. He then introduced bees from everywhere for subsequent years and reproduced from...

You know about Fibonacci-numbers? The Golden Mean?

    Re: Fastest way to increase

So, against the advice, you split your one and only colony into four, then again into ten or so nucs. End of story: no hives in Spring 2016. That's predictable.

    Good luck, you'll need it.

    Re: Fastest way to increase

Good advice have been given. I strongly recommend buying in the other hives or packages.

A very common and very unnecessary mistake beginners do. There is a rule of thumb here in Germany:...

Re: Treating mites during honey flow

    - cutting drone brood
    - powder sugar

Won't use essential oils during the flow, you get a bad case of flavoured honey otherwise.

    Re: First check of 2015

Maybe. But if you find an overly strong hive in the same yard, you have an indication.

Watch out: sometimes the bees bring their mites with them, too, which can lead to high mite infestation. So...

    Re: First check of 2015

Don't think bees absconding can be compared to swarms in Spring, Walt. Wouldn't be the first hive that completely moves into a neighbouring hive. Typically if the queen is lost, they all move out...

  24. Re: Oxalic Acid ... soon approved for use in beehives

Yes. That's how it looks like if a beekeeper accidently pours formic acid onto his leg:

    Re: walt wright's checkerboarding

Yes, it does. I have Carnica bees, but you need to take more care and pull the queen earlier in case.
