Flyer and BB,
When you feed outside, do you place the pollen subtitute dry or do you mix it with syrup?
I had a chance to do a little bee hunting today. The temperature on the bank's thermometer said 55 but that one I think is always high. Dispite the cool temps, I was able to get the bees to work my...

<Wouldn't fogging with FGMO control the trachial mites? Or are you trying to go totally chemical free?>
MaBe, I have no objection with FGMO. A friend uses this method and maybe I will...
Dave W,
In central Wisconsin, when would you say the eggs are laid that end up being winter bees?
Dave,
Here's the plan I have for interrupting the brood cycle in central Wisconsin: I would interrupt the brood cycle from mid June to mid July. The honey flow here is late June to early July so...
I think a brood break would have an impact because it would later create a break in young bees which the T-mite does need for its life cycle.
Thanks Dave for the VERY quick reply!
As a hobbiest (not particularly interested in optimum honey production) I wonder if it would make sense to intetionally interrupt brood rearing for a period of...
Does anyone know the life cycle of the tracheal mite?
Thanks
John
Thanks Robert. I'll take a look there.

I winter my bees in three deep boxes and I am
generous with winter stores. As a result, the
bees do not use all of this honey. Some of the honey may be a few years old. Should old
honey be moved...

marty,
I soaked the bees in lye for about a day. This did help. Removing the thorax "shell" was easier after soaking and it was easier to see different parts of the bee's insides after soaking....
Apparently there was a USDA address in one of the recent issues of
either Bee Culture or The American Bee Journal where you could send a
sample of your bees to be tested for Nosema. Does anyone...
Thank you. I appreciate the info and I'll give it a try.
I have a 60x to 100x microscope and have tried examining bees for
tracheal mites. After removing the thorax shell, I have a difficult time
identifying the trachea. Everything looks the same.
Do...
I know all of the bee books refer to how the bees (and queen) like to
work UP and that we should rotate brood chambers to give the bees
more room above. But, in an unmanaged hive (e.g. a feral...
I have a very small hive (say one frame of bees) in my home. Understanding that
bees need to go outside for cleansing flights, I have provided a screened area
beneath the hive to represent...
Thanks for the advice. I'll try it.
This spring I intend to replace several frames of very old comb. When I pull this comb, I would prefer the comb to be empty - free of brood, honey etc. If this comb has honey or brood, are there any...
Has anyone ever tried bee hunting (sometimes called "lining bees")? I spent a few hours at it this fall. Haven't found a wild hive yet but its safe to say... I'm hooked! Interested in learning about...
