    Re: discouraging sight

Thanks for some encouraging words. Two of the hives have entrance reducers. I put those there weeks ago to discourage robbing. The other 3 are not reduced. But I have seen dead bees at the entrances...

    Re: discouraging sight

Not much of either. I probably could have fit each hive in it's own nuk. We had several days of 70+ temps and the bees were very active. I fed them a lot at that time hoping that that would help...

    discouraging sight

I'm pretty new for beekeeping and I have 5 hives. All from swarms. This is my first overwinter and being in Texas, I'm not sure how much precaution I need to take for my bees to make it through. We...

    Re: Dying Bees

With me, it's very much the same. We have been having highs in the low 50's and low's around 30. I see 10 to 20 dead bees on the front porch. I have 5 hives. Very similar throughout.

Re: Where to buy bulk sugar?

Okay, maybe I'm in a weird location. I just bought 50 pounds at Sam's for about $19 and I'm in Texas right along the Red River. I do agree that smaller packages on sale sometimes is cheaper than bulk

    Re: Swarm catching question

I set out three traps this season and caught three swarms. I couldn't believe it! I will also say this. I don't know if it was this way with everyone else, but when I caught that first swarm, it was...

    Re: Curious

Okay, I may be missing something along the way, but in my world, a two deep hive is not weak. If you have a hive of russians that is two deeps, what would be wrong with taking a frame of brood/eggs...
  9. Re: How do I get bearded bees back into the hive before a move?

Misting with water has worked for me in the past.
  10. Re: Cold front, Bees still going at the water

That's what I hoped. I guess we are in a flow! Yes! It's hard to tell sometimes around here.
  11. Cold front, Bees still going at the water

I know that for the last 3 weeks or so, there has been no rain and the bees have really been drinking the water and I figured that they were using it to cool the hive. Now a cold front has come in...

    Re: Manipulations during inspections

Hopefully this won't hijack the thread or anything, but while talking about manipulation, if you notice that a hive, in my case a weak one, is building more brood comb on one side of the hive and not...

    Stupid Bees

Maybe they aren't stupid but I basically a generation of bees that do not know what rain is. It has not rained here in over a month and the bees in two particular hives really like to beard at night....

Re: Question about a bee tree

That is a good point. I will talk it over with the owner. If she doesn't mind holding out til the spring, I will get them then.

    Question about a bee tree

Okay, I have the opportunity to remove some bees from the inside of a tree and I'm a little concerned. I went over yesterday to put the first part of the hogan trap on the tree. The entrance is right...
  16. Re: Can't find queen no brood and honey gone but lots of bees

If you are certain you have no queen, then I think you should combine with the other hive. If you have a weak hive, then you will probably have to feed anyway, so why not combine and maybe you won't...

    Re: Combatting SHB

I used to have just one hive when I originally started out. It was in a very shady location and really had a problem with SHB. I now have 5 hives and they are in full complete sunshine. I have seen...

Re: Does feeding lead to lazy bees?

My five hives are all from swarms. It is very interesting to watch how they expand or not. I have fed, but not that much. The way I look at it, I have given them a little better chance of survival...

    Re: Moving Hive

I moved my first hive from heavy shade to full sun. I very rarely see any shb now. My entrances are southwestish and they are getting a very brutal sun these days. So far, they have been handling it...

    Re: Refusal To Draw Comb

I have five first year hives, all from swarms. The oldest is from the first of June. I will probably be overwintering most in a single deep. I hope it works! As long as they have plenty to eat, they...

    Re: Dry Weather

We are really dry here as well. The bees are really bringing in a lot of pollen from something and there is a bunch in the hives. Not that much honey, but lots of pollen.

Re: Do your bees die in your fountains

I use an old bird bath tilted just a little. The sides are sloped and textured and as the water evaporates, the bees have a nice "beach" to drink from. Also, leaves have been falling into the bath...

    Re: Queen but no eggs

I started feeding. We will see what happens. I'm not sure we are in a dearth or not. They are bringing in LOTS of pollen and the heat is keeping them busy cooling the hive. We will see in a few days.

    Re: golden rod bloom

I hope we have some Golden Rod. I haven't paid any attention to it until I started raising bees. I haven't seen any yet, but it may have just not started yet here in Texas.

    Queen but no eggs

I have a pretty weak hive that only has one deep. This is a pretty young hive. It was a swarm I trapped mid July. The queen has been doing pretty well and I inspected today. As I was going through...
