One of my hives swarmed yesterday 6/13/2013 Lyons, IL (southwest Chicago suburb)

This is year 4 for this hive and I was so busy managing the other year 4 hive, that I didn't see it coming. It was the size of a large watermelon. My question is what should I be doing to manage...
I bought the electric one from Dadant, it gets hot!!! I sometimes think that I take too much of the comb away with it, but it works fast, don't lay it on the counter:(
They always go up. The house bees will start right away drawing foundation right in the middle two frames, just watch in 4 days, its amazing.
Keep feeding until they stop taking it, they know better than you do.
Whats in your 5 mile radius. I have 4 hives in my backyard and the girls are rarely in my yard, but I have forest preserves and tons of neighbors with beautiful flower gardens.
I've lost 100% or 5 hives this season. Two were very strong in October bought as 5 frame nucs in May.(local trusted beekeeper) One was a package that was looking good until late summer and then...
We tried adding MegaBee instead of soy flour and it worked real good.
Looking for a beekeeper or alternative medicine person who does apitherapy in the Vale, Colorado area. Please respond if anyone has any information.
Thanks
thanks everyone, it would make sense that the mites are dead if the bees are dead and gone. This nuc was installed in April in southern Indiana, very wet all spring, summer and fall. They never...
Got the word from the bee inspector. What type of hive clean up is recommend to install a new nuc this spring?
Thanks for your replys. I don't treat with anything, so I will hope for the best. Live and learn. The source was the problem and yes I am working with local queen breeders for next year.
Hi Everyone,
I had a dead out in October from a nuc that I got in April, it was cool and wet all season and this hive got progressively weaker even though I fed them all summer. When I inspected in...
I have 2 hives in northern IL, this is my second season. My bees were mildly aggressive, always guarding, would fly up at me the minute I lifted off the lid. I did my first inspection Saturday, it...
Well, I just heard last night at our local bee club that feeding sugar on top of newspaper on top of the frames works real well and it helps with the moisture problem. I'm up in Chicagoland and...
This is my first year too. May and June they were infants, I was up all night worried about everything, lived in this website. July they were grade schoolers ran around the yard and listened to me....
First season beekeeper,
I have two hives, with two deeps each and two honey supers one deep and one medium on each hive. I have harvested a total of 4 gallons between the two. Things seemed to...
I just harvested a deep super of clear wonderful tasting honey. I haven't fed my bees anything since 5/30, and I have added deeps and medium supers since then and thats what I took from. The wax is...
So I'm ready to harvest the honey or rather the honey is ready to be harvested. I'm suppose to be going on vacation. Can I take the honey and leave the capped honey in (where) if any place for 5...
Thanks, that was just the information I was looking for, the honey is nearly ready and I am new at this and did not plan for needing more equipment than I initially invested in.
I have an opportunity to buy some supers and frames from a old farmer you is in a nursing home and the people who bought the farm are trying to empty the barn. What should I be looking for in the...
1. If this past Sunday I had 30% of all my frames in a honey super capped, when should I go back expecting it to be 100%. Days, weeks?
2. How many drones per frame should I see to consider it...
I have seen several earwigs in my one hive. Should I be worried?
I just logged in to ask the same question, but here is another along the same line. I have on one hive a deep that is the third deep and it is all drawn and only 3 frames capped. On the second hive...
I saw a bee like that yesterday stuck on my sock and thought that it had tried to sting me and lost its bottom and just hadn't died yet. It was strange looking. I squished it too. Are these the...
