    Re: Swarm Percentage

If you don't do something to prevent it, like splitting, checkerboarding, removing the queen. Then I think 99-100% will swarm.

    D. David Tarpy from NCSU talked about queens a few years ago and if I remember correctly it came down to the better queens having a wider thorax. How they get the wider thorax, Don't think they...

Re: So I made a deposit on 2 nucs back in November

    MikeinCarolina,
You asked what we would do and opinions were given.

It won't get your nucs here any faster arguing with people here that gave you what you asked for.

Sticky: Re: diy oxalic acid vaporizer

I used the 1104 and did not look for the 1107.
I did get the 1104 from O'Reileys. They did not have it in stock but got it in a few hours.

Ok This sounded like a fun project so I went to a local machine shop and had the aluminum block drilled tapped and a welled out.
I started with a sketch from Beesource and after discussions with...

Re: So I made a deposit on 2 nucs back in November

The weather has been cool and rainy so I could understand the date being pushed.
I don't think he is using your nucs to make a honey crop, but he is mostly correct that you would normally not get...

Re: Titi or swamp cyrilla as nectar source

Don't have any Titi around here that I know of. But our state bee inspector told us at a meeting a few weeks ago that they are associating the titi plant with blue brood. Seems that you may loose...

Re: Queen present but no brood, what to do?

Adding a frame of brood from another hive may stimulate the queen to start laying, but you may need to replace the queen.

    Re: smoker fuel size

I cut mine into 6 inch X 12 to 18 inch strips. I fold a half dozen of them up and keep in my bee jacket pocket so I have them handy when needed.

I liked the inspection table as well and built one in 2011. The link covering the plans is below.

  15. Re: Two general questions for seasoned beekeepers (for fun)

    Best Advice,
Get a mentor and join them when they go into their hives. Also do this before attending the bee school.
  16. Re: Hot Tubbing Bees (or how to end their vacation?)...

I think dsegrest is right the cold weather will keep them in the hive. Short term you could use some Fishers Bee Quick to keep them away. It has a nice almond smell so nice for you and it will keep...

    Dsegrest,
A fellow beekeeper had a box slide off the front of the hive when he was checking for queen cells. A comment I have remembered.

Re: Common mistakes or other topics for a class.

When checking for queen cells by tilting a box up and looking at the bottom of the box for queen cells, be careful not to let the box slide off the front of the hive and on to the ground.

You may also want to consider a 5 gallon paint filter bag from Lowes home improvement. IT does a great job of getting all the bee parts and wax bits out.

The robbers smell the stores that they are getting, I have used Vicks vapor rub to mask the smell. It may not work in this case since they have been at it for a long time but it may be worth a try.
