Re: Pollen in MA in late november

Ya, on warmer days mine have still been bringing in goldenrod (likely) even though the plants are all dead i'm sure there is pollen hanging around.
  2. Re: Hello! Ask This Old House brought me here!

Watch swarm catching videos on youtube all winter.. JP the beeman is good.. plenty of others. Put ad in Craigslist saying you'll come get swarms.

    Re: Foundation-less frames: my experience

All foundationless... or adding foundationless into a hive of mostly foundation? because foundation creates a vacuum of drone laying spots and when they get it they go nuts.

    Re: Foundation-less frames: my experience

I was responding to the person who said that it was drone comb or something talking about your picture.. not your post about it. Your frames are always great to look at.

Re: Should a new beek start with langs?

But, like many hobbies.. being practical or the "best" doesn't mean it can't be fun and interesting. Antique cars are less safe, less comfortable, less economical, slower etc compared to a nice...

Re: Should a new beek start with langs?

perhaps part of the problem is that anyone that could be a mentor tells them they are going to fail before they even begin and don't give them the help they may need.

    i honestly don't see the...

    Re: Split cluster?

End entrance or side/middle? I wonder if you have brood nest in the middle and 2 sections of honey on either side that they are gathering on? or maybe the opposite and they are covering brood.

Re: Should a new beek start with langs?

could also have been many other reasons other than the box they were in.

my gf started with a top bar they did fine, made it through winter, swarmed, put them in another top bar. They made it...

    Re: Building across bars

Once they get started straight they are pretty self sufficient. but you do need to pay attention at the start.

    Re: Building across bars

Also, make sure the guides go all the way to the ends so they arent tempted to curve it. Popcicle sticks with no wax on them worked fine for my gf's hive top bar and my foundationless lang. once...

    Re: Foundation-less frames: my experience

What was in the rest of your hive? Foundation with worker comb? they had a vaccuum of drone laying area so they fixed it.

I think for true tests of foundationless worker/drone you need to...

Re: No Stores Going into Winter

I put a cup or so of dry sugar on top of mine last week as as an experiment and they hauled tons of it out the front door. 2:1 they suck up a liter in an afternoon.

Re: Hives made out of cherry?

you could make a pretty banging Top bar/long hive out of it too and use a really durable finish. no lifting, large panels to show off the color.
