    Re: Plastic foundation

I use ritecell in my deep frames but only half a sheet centered in the frame.
And with some extra wax added. They take to it well with more wax.

    Re: Behavior post split

`as Oldtimer said, get a good robber screen on that split, the flow has slowed in your area and that means the foragers are looking for anything they can find... if you can get a screen that you...
  4. Re: Getting capped QCs while keeping queen in the hive

Somewhere in the examples of the OTS queen rearing was a method of creating a queenless box just separating brood boxes with a super. That gives you most of the cloake board effect with just a queen...

Re: Questions about Michael Palmer Nucs

I think in ME you need to get them going with laying queens in early July. You can feed them syrup until it gets cold, but after that I would recommend a sugar brick on top for the winter, with a...
  6. Re: Anyone tried this with med frames / plastic foundation starter strips

I've had better luck with a half sheet of rite cell in the middle, with extra wax brushed on, and then small starter strips of wax along the rest of the top bar. Got the ideas from Lauri

    Re: New Beekeeper in Massachusetts

There is a thread started by Bob J titled Colony update in MA you can follow, they have been giving local updates, he is in Quincy and Marshfield.
  8. Re: When the new queen would tear down the other queen cell?

I wouldn't destroy it, more likely they just haven't gotten around to it

    Re: Leds and bees

How many led bulbs do you have? Do they all attract the bees?

I was wondering if it might be a certain color led that attracts them. There are lots of different led bulbs.

Thank for sharing your install photos....can you tell us what that nuc box is with all the hardware on it? ( in the background in your first pic).

Thank you for the link to the video, while we all aren't commercial I think it helps to understand the potential effects of the exposure. If I hadn't read it here I never would have known.

Re: Suggestions For Building A Quilt Box

I use burlap and they don't chew thru it. It can sag an inch so leave room below it.

I also have a 2 inch pink insulation board at the top, seem to work fine.

    Re: Nuc/Split Question

If moving frames of bees to a nearby nuc usually will result in the foragers returning to the original hive, why can't you use that as a way to separate the young bees?

Re: What all do I need for grafting?

Not sure what you are referring to by all the "parts" ?

There are some short cuts along the way you can look into

A snelgrove board can let you use a single hive as cell builder and finisher.

    Re: Allogrooming Is Here!

I am confused with this thread.

You are 10 years treatment free and almost up to the 13 hives that you need for some sharing of genetics.

So what hives are you testing the new oav device on?...

    Good info, thanks for sharing.

Are those swarm counts actual calls coming in looking for someone to collect a swarm ,
Or do they include hives in member yards that swarmed .?

Did you have any sugar or fondant on the hive?

I saw the same thing last weekend, but I assumed it was because they were storing some of the sugar from the bricks I had on top of the top box.
