Re: Swarm commander: Does It Really Work?

I think they recommend a couple squirts every couple weeks. Just ordered two new bottles off Amazon its cheaper than ordering off of the official website because he charges his state sales tax to out...

Re: swarm commander vs ultra breeze bee suit

I can also attest for the altra breeze, we own several of them.
The inventor was a long time member of this site, as is his sister.
    Made in USA
  6. Re: Northern CA folks - when do you set out your swarm traps?

    End of February.
Remember the large swarms from strong overwintered hives come early, & they have some of the best queens.

    Re: cost of starting ???????

In the spirit of RichardsonTX post desiring not to scare off new beekeepers.
Sales of honey can pay of that initial expense within a couple years.

    Re: Question about Hive Dimensions

Buy 1 box from the supplier you would most likely do business with in the future.
Build to his dimensions so you're stuff is compatible with his. Then down the road when you need to buy things they...

Re: To use or not to use small cell foundation?

All our brood frames are small cell or natural cell. There is no downside to it.
We started with it about 10 years ago, & have no intention of changing.

    Re: cost of starting ???????

US you can exspect to pay $1000 to start a couple hives, with a couple honey supers, suit, & some tools.
This price is purchasing everything from a bee supply company, no harvesting equipment.

    Re: Hello

Like you're name. Don't know if you're in the area but, Klamath Basin has a good bee club.
  13. Re: Beecosystems? I know it has been mentioned here right?

When I read about it a couple months ago, they indicated bees where included with the starter piece.
I think the flow hive has a better chance of gaining acceptance than this thing does.
  14. Re: Mice snacked on honey- should I still extract it?

    I wouldn't eat it.
Give it to new hives you start in the spring, let the bees decide.

    Re: Advice for AHB hive

    I wouldn't waist you're time with them.
They are screwing up the DNA of the other feral colonies in the area.
  17. Re: Treatment Free Or Not to Be? - One Person's Internal Debate

    Just my 10 cents worth.
I'm running IPM with small cell under 20 hives. Last winter they all survived, & we haven't lost one this year yet.
I'm a little negligent in my IPM practices, but its still...

Re: Allergies and my bee hives?

Since we started beekeeping about 10 years ago my season allergies have almost disappeared.
    Coincidence, I don't know.

  20. Re: Downsized one hive, what to do with extra frames.

It has to be the Azawaii strain of BT. I spray it on frames then store them in the barn not closed up in bags you don't want them to mold.
Just a little screen to keep animals out.

    Re: Honey Extractor Question

I would also recommend the Maxant 3100 3'6'9 frame. IMO Pay for the motorized version. We started with that machine when we only had 4 hives.
Now we have the 20 frame Maxant, worth every penny.

  23. Re: What tells you it's time to do emergency feeding?

Weight, in the bay area 60# is a good weight. If you lift the back of the hive & it feels light they need sugar.
I only feed if they need it, or if I'm trying to get them to start brooding up in...
