Re: A HUGE thanks to Barry!

Better yet.....in your spare time you should divide all the members up by their plant hardiness zones....worldwide. Add a properly coordinated color bar next to their screen name...so that everyone...

    Re: Marooned!

It is a beautiful spot. My friend has a cabin at the beeyard...about 2 miles from the crossing in the photo. It has a fireplace with lots of firewood...and I brought in plenty of food. I've been...

    Re: Dead hive, mites?

If my memory serves me....the objective test protocol is....if one doesn't find thousands of dead mites on the bottom board....it was something else.

Me too. And in all but the rarest instance, in my personal experience....the blame was properly placed.

    Re: Marooned!

Of course I exaggerate a bit. I drove in and unloaded all my stuff at the beeyard...then with the rain approaching I drove back and parked on the other side of the river...on higher ground...just in...

    Re: Dead hive, mites?

What makes you think I was referring to you?
I agree...looking for facts is the only way to know....which is why I always first ask...what were your mite counts? or did you test for mites? or...

    Marooned!

On a 'quick' trip to check my NC mountain hives....I was marooned for three days.
The river rose quickly. Anything over 2ft is considered unsafe.

    Re: Dead hive, mites?

    Groan.....
    I'm sure you're a smarter, better beekeeper than I am....but.....
I'm also pretty sure my mite related losses would be double today what they were a decade ago if I hadn't given those...

    Re: Dead hive, mites?

We ought to do that. At the same time we ought to appoint several members to insist that it was anything but mites... candidates such as CCD and nosema ceranae....things that are extremely unlikely...

    Re: No compete clauses

I've taught beekeeping classes for years. I've had people ask if I wasn't afraid that I was training my own competition. My answer has been that I know what it takes and I know the return and anyone...

    Re: Lost Them!!!

And in the great majority of cases it is mites. The real train wreck is the number of people who underestimate or choose to ignore the threat posed by varroa.

    Re: Lost Them!!!

I don't know about Maine but you'd want the treatments completed before they start producing winter brood. Here mid Sept would be a good time to be completed....certainly no later than the end of...

    Re: SHB OAV theory

I was opening hives yesterday that had had a few rounds of oav in January.....the last round about two weeks ago. I saw plenty of shb. OAV doesn't kill 'em.
PS...when treating I had actual 'sticky'...

    Re: Dead hive, guesses welcome

Not sarcastic...just not too sure. I've never seen a properly conducted alcohol wash come up totally empty. Is it impossible? No. Unlikely? In my opinion, yes.
