    Re: Viability of swarms?

I don't know how they could be less viable than package bees from GA, but swarm calls and cutouts are just plain fun. Out of 9 or 10 cutouts last year, I charged 3 of the owners $200 each, because...

Re: Critique Please - Swarm Infographic

I did the same thing the past two seasons (my first two seasons keeping bees) and it really paid off. Between 10 and 15 removals each season so far. Also, Orkin no longer allows employees to spray...

Re: Lets talk about Long Lang Hives

That is a nice looking setup! I am going to copy your design, and make it into several deep nucs. Also, does that metal roofing fence help as a windbreak? My bees are high in elevation for WV, and...

Re: Have not even started and already discouraged...

This is good advice. Remove a couple of hives or swarms for free by posting on Craigslist. All of my hives been obtained this way. You get to help someone out and get local bees.

    Fall Flow in WV?

I am near Parsons, WV, and was wondering if there was a significant fall flow. It was not apparent in the increase of stores in any of my hives.

The elevation is around 2900' where the hives are....

    Re: Bee Vacuum Please

I have ~28 cutouts under my belt now, and the vac is a great tool in most situations. Several of the ones I did this year were fairly easy and no vac was needed, or would have really even helped....

    Re: Hive removal ?

    Xfish,

Go for it. Bee wrangling a great way to learn and a great way to get strong bees. Jpthebeeman on youtube was all the mentoring I needed, around 30 removals ago.

    Make it happen.

    Pittsburgh Beek Needed for Removals

    All,

I have an ad on CL for free removals, and have done nearly a dozen this year. However, I am getting emails from homeowners in the Pittsburgh area, which is 80 miles or so from where I live....

Re: 2 meter boxes: Never done one before

You and I are doing the same thing, several states apart.

Here is the vac that I built (the third one), and it has been the most efficient and bee friendly one by far. It's also the lightest.

Re: Doing a cutout this weekend

If the barn is getting torn down anyway, open the walls up with a chainsaw and get it done. Sounds like fun to me.
  13. Re: What plant/s are flowing nectar right now near Parsons, WV?

I have a mix of mature hardwood forest, a field full of clover, and lots of overgrown areas of brush and milkweed. I just don't see many bees on anything, for them to be this active. There is sumac...
  14. What plant/s are flowing nectar right now near Parsons, WV?

I have done much research and tried to see what the bees are foraging on right now, but can't seem to find what they are collecting nectar from. Yesterday, there were more bees in the air than I have...

    Re: Cut out Question

You can cut out a piece of plywood that is 16.25" x 20", with a hole in the center the size of the top of the bucket. That will let you get the lid off and flip the bucket over, so they have to go...

Just put them in your deep, and try to save as much brood and empty combs as possible. Leave the honey out of the new setup. If there are not enough combs to fill your box, give them drawn comb if...

    Three queens in a cutout

I just did my 19th or 20th cutout, and found 3 queens.

Re: What time of day to start a cut-out?

I start all cutouts at the same time.... as soon as I can sneak away from work. If possible just leave the hive box there a few days, and pick them all up at after dark. If it's not close by, I leave...
