  1. Re: Lots of nectar in hives, but no capped honey yet...

Thank you, AD! This is the first summer I've noticed they haven't had capped honey. And yet you're harvesting!

I wonder if this has anything to do with my switchover this summer from Italian to...
  2. Re: Lots of nectar in hives, but no capped honey yet...

Is it a New England thing? Maybe food sources have been scarcer this year.
  3. Lots of nectar in hives, but no capped honey yet...

    Is that okay?

It's been a tough summer honey-wise for my now-5 hives. Today I went thru them all (I'm having to do this about every week to keep an eye on stores) and their nectar supply has...
  4. Re: To feed or not to feed [that is the question and a couple more]

A new split! That's what I would do.

You have grown your first new successful queen! Congrats!

And guess what. It's all trial and error. You hope it works, and if it doesn't, then next time.
  5. Re: Why are there still so many drones in one hive?

I went thru my hives again today. Wow, the pile of dead drones in front of that hive that had a lot of drones. Poor things. Looks like most of them are out of the hive now.
  6. Re: Why are there still so many drones in one hive?

McBee - My great g'mother had a homestead in international falls, the nation's icebox. I can imagine it gets cold there before about anywhere.

    Re: Wintering weights for colonies

Is that what you'd look for to overwinter?

    Re: Wintering weights for colonies

Acebird - that's really interesting. Almost looks like a seesaw effect. So you weigh the seesaw thing to subtract, then you line it up under the hive, apply pressure on one end, and see what the...

    Re: Wintering weights for colonies

www - by lifting the hive just clear of the hive stand and then doubling the weight, that's an accurate weight measure?

I always wondered how people weighed their hives, considering you can't just...

I wish I had a hive scale too. At this point I'm just poking my nose in there frequently to monitor progress.

Re: Collecting cool apiary photos - care to add?

    Those are bee condos. :)

Interesting to see how many people have bear fences and how many don't. I'm also glad to see my hives aren't the only ones that are overgrown.

    Re: Wintering weights for colonies

Just out of curiosity, did they make it thru winter fine with their fall feeding stores?

Sorry, I forgot you had mentioned prior that you don't attend the meetings.

That's what Ben said in the last meeting (do you go to the Seacoast meetings?) - I was surprised.

Maybe they're too stuffed from the syrup to move? :)

    Re: Wintering weights for colonies

I use top feeders (Brushy Mtn) on the smaller hives which are nice because they hold like 2 gal. of syrup. But I've been feeding 1:1 because there is a flow now and I'm not desperate enough. Right...

    Re: Wintering weights for colonies

Thanks, I've been feeding some. I heard that by mid-Sept. they'll store all they're going to store, after that it's just for consumption.

Would a small hive, tho, need 90 lbs. to overwinter? I'm...

    Re: Wintering weights for colonies

With only a nuc, how will you get a full medium of honey stores? I have a 10 frame medium nuc as well as a two-10 frame mediums hive and I'm wondering how much honey they'll need to overwinter, and...

    Re: Wintering weights for colonies

Not to answer for him, but my hunch is that too much honey in the hive might leave too little space for the cluster. I don't think I'll have that problem. If there does end up being too much honey in...

    Re: Wintering weights for colonies

enj. - I'm no expert, but if you figure a hive needs about 70 - 100 lbs. of honey to overwinter in our cold areas, which is about 2 mediums of honey (since 1 medium holds about 35 lbs., and one...
  20. Re: Michigan Loses Right to Farm Farewell to Backyard Chickens and Beekeepers

If you have 6 hives going into winter, and 2 hives coming out of winter, does that average out to 4 hives? :D
  21. Re: Are carpenter ants a nuisance or big trouble?

The thing I like about "hiding" the feeder jars in an empty super is that I would *imagine* they would attract less attention from robber bees, esp. this time of year. Otherwise, I'd keep my feeder...

Just found this in my yard today. I didn't know what it was till someone said it was joe pye weed:

  23. Re: One thing you find out when installing robber screens...

Actually, with Brushy's bee screen, you can open the bottom entrances too, so it can function as a bee screen when nectar begins to dry up, or as a regular entrance during flows. So maybe it's best...
  24. Re: One thing you find out when installing robber screens...

Jason - In Barrington? The robbing screens were Brushy Mtn: http://www.brushymountainbeefarm.com/10-Frame-Moving-and-Robbing-Screen/productinfo/517/

I should bring them, along with the home-made...
  25. Re: One thing you find out when installing robber screens...

That's the truth. I've glanced towards the hive but refuse to think about them. :D
