I think you answered your question. The owner sprayed them, there probably sick.

I will usually leave an empty feeder in the bee yard after I remove it and allow them to clean it then wash it out and allow it to dry before storing them.

How long since you stopped feeding them? Is there room to lay or are they honey bound?

If honey bound give her more room to lay. ie empty comb.
