  1. Re: How do you start a new package of bees with no foundation?

Find out when your bees were put in the package, then leave them stay in the package for 3 or 4 days. Then, just release the queen directly in with the bees. No need to hang the cage. I hung cages my...

Re: OA treating of topbar hive

I am not fond of the idea of cutting into the hive to make a slot to insert the vaporizor, especially with bees in the hives, although it is a possible solution. While I have top bar hives that...

    OA treating of topbar hive

Does anyone have any tricks or methods as to how to treat a topbar hive with OA vapors? My hives have 3/4 inch round entrance holes so you can't use a OA vaporizor like SNL sells.
    Has anyone found...
  4. Re: Anything I forgot to add before it leaves garage, first TBH build.

Beautiful hive. Too bad they don't stay that pristine once tens of thousands of propolising insects with dirty feet start crawling all over it!

Re: what temp can I slip a new sugar block to them.

Everyone always says they opened them and it didn't hurt them. Has anyone opened them on a cold day and it did hurt them? If so, how were they harmed?

  6. Re: Mountain Spin-Off Method ? Has anyone tried this ?

However, this might be a great method to add feed to a top bar hive, where there is no access to get to sugar above.
  7. Re: Michigan is going CRAZY! Possible 2015 law change about keeping bees

Is that 6 foot fence around your hives going to keep the bee sh-t off of everything, or the bees out of the birdbaths, or out of their picnics during a dearth? The bees are still going to find their...

    Re: Stings

Ruthie, I think you are on to something. I find that if I am liquored up when doing an inspection, the stings don't seem to hurt as much. And if I stay liquored up for a couple of days after, the...

    Re: Beekeeping and autism

My neighbor's 20 year old nephew, who has aspergers, was visiting and she thought that beekeeping might be something that he could get interested in, so I took him to see my hives. We approached from...

Re: Is it time to mail order a mated queen?

Oldtimer, I just put the eggs and brood in this past Sunday, so 4 days ago. I do have other capped brood I could prop them up with, but I was worried it might not be enough since its been so long...

Is it time to mail order a mated queen?

I have a hive that I split from 6 1/2 weeks ago, taking the queen and a couple combs of brood. I checked back 2 weeks after the split and there were 3 or 4 capped queen cells, so I let it go to do...

Re: Where Do You Extract Honey?

A lot of these posts sound like they are right out of a book I've read: Everything I Want to Do Is Illegal, by Joel Salatin. He has the same struggles as a small farmer trying to sell his homegrown...
  14. Re: What to use if you forgot or can't find your hive tool?

The point on the 5-1, or 14 in 1, painters tool is great for getting those darned SHB that try to hide in the cells.

    Top bar hive split

I split two of my tbhs last week by removing the bar with the queen and several bars of open/capped brood and some honey and placing in a top bar nuc. The parent hives are booming with bees and many...

I just hope you aren't disappointed a year from now when the bees turn that beautiful work ugly with propolis, pollen stains, bee poop, wax, etc.

Re: How far to put powdered ant poison?

+1 on the Amdro. I put a circle around my house and a circle around the beehives each spring. No ants to speak of for the rest of the season.

Re: A strong hive that wants to swarm, what to do?

If that swarm is imminent, will splitting out the old queen and some bees satisfy the need to swarm, or will they still swarm with a newly hatched virgin queen?

Re: Top bar nuc dimensions question
