Re: How many hive bodies to buy

U can never have enough woodenware. The season is darn near year 'round where I am, I would imagine Oviedo is year 'round. Those hives will grow fast and continue to grow into the late summer. If...

    Re: Foundationless Question

I used the 9 frames in a 10 frame super and that worked well enough. Only after they were drawn though.

    Re: Foundationless Question

Early in the flow this works for me. After the point in the season, they will draw cells out directly on top of the cappings leaving the foundationless frame (or foundation for that matter) alone. I...

    Re: Foundationless Question

In my limited experience (2 seasons), there seems to be a cutoff point where they start to widen the honey combs instead of nice spacing, what I mean is that if you put an empty between two drawn...

Re: Why do bees leave the hive to n December?

Pretty sure they collect water too.
  8. Re: Triumph to tragedy -- a tale of broken comb -- when to fix?

I personally wouldn't wait any longer than you have to. If the combs are touching and the bee-space is compromised, the hive beetles will have a field day! It may not be best to go in a hive two...

Re: How to capture a misguided colony?

A really sharp utility knife and patience. Moving it may not be such a good idea, I see collapsed comb. Good luck!

Re: Question about musty tasting honey

I too have had "musty honey", without any real proof I attributed it to the crush and strain of brood comb. The worst of which was DARK comb from a survivor colony in a tree, I could barely eat it....

Re: What goes in grooved bottom?

Ditto on the hive beetles! I'd put wax or a little strip of wood.

Re: White mark on some of my bees?

I believe it is jewel weed. Jason Chrisman has a youtube video of a bee emerging from the flower with the stripe. It looks related to the Impatiens referenced above.

We have planes and helicopters spray our neighborhood for 'squiters and thankfully haven't noticed any dead bees. They usually spray at sunup. I haven't seen the fog truck in a couple years. ...

If this was a "package" of bees, the new generation from the current queen is now in charge accounting for the lack of aggression earlier. Size of colony can cause defensiveness, when it's only a few...

    Re: Should I combine

I don't know that I have advice, just something that I consider in this situation. What is the mite count for the weak colony? It would be a shame to add a bunch of varroa to your new swarm.

Re: Join 2 week hives or not...

I have had luck in situations like this by reducing the hive down to a 5 frame box. Less space to deal with. They seem to gain more traction in smaller equipment, but I'm a long way from Montana. ...
