    Re: What are the odds...

They were mobbed all over the queen cage. They did move when I blew on them, but came right back to the cage. And yes, there are attendants in there with her.

    Re: What are the odds...

Yeah, I would say this situation is fairly unique. What a mess!

No, she was a local unmarked queen. She always hung out in the same area of the hive.

Just checked again (the entire hive) and...

    Re: What are the odds...

Didn't see her today. The bees were still hostile to the new queen. Fingers crossed the old queen doesn't find her way back. What a SNAFU.

    Re: What are the odds...

Backstory: I had removed what I think is a locally born and mated (so probably oriented), failing queen from a hive and placed her in a queen cage with a few attendants and re-queened the hive with a...

    Re: Queen Question

The thing is, I also keep thinking she might be ready to lay any time now! She is a beautiful striped girl.

It's tough to requeen, too. A few times this year the bees did not accept my new...

    Queen Question

I have a hive that requeened itself and need a little guidance. Here are my notes from the hive:
    5/29 -tons of brood
6/26 -saw 3/4 filled supercedure cell
7/13 - saw closed supercedure cell
    7/21...

    Re: Combined Hives Check In

I can appreciate that advice; however, if I had followed it, would have two hopelessly queenless (and by now, dead) hives. :)

    Combined Hives Check In

I newspaper combined two hives, one 4 frame queenright nuc with a packed single queenless deep a week ago. Just checked the top box by pulling out a few frames. Found some eggs and a few filled queen...

Re: Have I lost my queen?

Where on the frame were the drone cells? Were the drone cells like a fresh box of bullets, like "enj" described, and not flat like regular brood? It is uncommon for a healthy new queen to start...

So are you thinking add the nucleus on top of the double deep?

    Re: Combination Question

I think the smaller nuc on top maybe gets hot and needs water? I usually combine with resources. I've only combined two smaller nucs with queens twice with larger colonies and both times both queens...

    Re: Combination Question

So do you think adding a frame of brood and the queen from the nuc into the larger colony? I've had really great results in the past when using push in cages for queen introduction. I like the idea...

    Re: Queen piping

I also heard piping IRL for the first time this year. I had two caged mated queens in a dark cupboard right next to each other and one was piping to the other. Pretty cool to hear this cool sound...

  16. Re: spraying bees with syrup cause robbing? what are your thoughts

I wouldn't use sugar water in the fall. Stick with nothing (if doing a quick in and out) or smoke. I keep inspections early in the morning and short and sweet this time of year.

    Combination Question

Colony A: I have a decently populated hive (about 1 1/2 deeps) with what looks like a brand new non-productive queen. I am going to give her a few more days, but if there are still no eggs, I am...

Re: To Requeen or Not to Requeen

Found a queen cell in another hive. I moved it to this big hive to see what they did with it. Checked it the next day and it was torn down. Does that mean there is a virgin in there somewhere?

    I...

To Requeen or Not to Requeen

I opened one of my big hives yesterday to find only one frame left of brood. The rest of the double deep is completely devoid of brood. This is a huge hive, tons of bees.

Just so happens I have a...

Re: When Should I See New Eggs...

    Thanks!

I split the hive and separated the queen into the split, so it technically was not a true swarm. I caught them just in time. They capped the first queen cell about two days later. So to be...

When Should I See New Eggs...

...from a swarmed hive? I saw queen cells (4) about a week ago. When I checked yesterday, the bees were tearing down the last of the queen cells.

Question: how long from when the swarm happened...

    Re: ONE really angry bee

Sounds like a good guard bee to me!

If it were tons of bees looking for ways to get inside your clothes or attacking your face, I'd say you have a hot hive, but only one sounds like a good guard...

    Re: Re-Queening FAIL

    UPDATE:
Hive #1 - Checked, they seem pretty chill. I removed the cork over the candy side. Fingers crossed. They are nearly broodless, so hopefully just "sad" enough to accept this queen.
