Re: new to bees, never been stung, should I?

You will not have a anaphylactic reaction the first time. Your body has to exposed to the histamine first. You can however have localized reactions, that does not mean you are allergic. People often...

    Re: Now mating nuc question

They are like Lauri's, a deep nuc split in half. They have deep mini frames. I was thinking of drilling a 3/4" hole for an entrance but am afraid of robbing.

    Re: Beginner's mistakes

I wish that I could have my first year over. I killed so many bees. I would have treated for mites and would likely be further along. Definitely addicted and want.to continue to learn.

    Re: Now mating nuc question

I have my mating nucs built. What type of entrance is best to use? Should I just drill a hole in the side or make bottom boards? My main concern is robbing and having to use some type of a robbing...

    Beginner's mistakes

It is that time of year that those who are getting ready to start beekeeping are hopefully doing research. So I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread with early on mistakes made so others...

    Re: Small colony question?

Yes I have decided not to bother them. It is a damp overcast day anyway. Gnor if you watch JC bees he actually had someone else test this by knocking on a hive for thirty minutes and there was no...

    Small colony question?

I have one colony that is smaller than the others. They are all mostly Carniolan, so I realize that they can be smaller. However on warmer days when the others are out foraging, there is no activity...

    Re: Queen timing box question?

Thank you Mr. Palmer. I never thought about using the table saw. It is a metal bound excluder. How did you close of the bottom? I thought about putting strips on the bottom board to close off where...

    Re: Queen timing box question?

Thanks for the link, but it still does not answer my question on how to cut it. The excluder I have has a metal band around the edge. If I take off what is needed to fit on just one side there will...

    Queen timing box question?

Built a ten frame box and gave enough room for three frames, cut a saw kerf for vertical excluder. Question is how do most cut the excluder? If I cut it all off one side, it will leave it flimsy with...

Re: Robbing starting, ideas to stop?

Re: Robbing starting, ideas to stop?

It looks as though they are not able to get in the hives. Some fighting on the tops. I put a feeder about 300' from hives and that has seemed to help. Rain on Monday hopefully that resets everything.

Re: Robbing starting, ideas to stop?

This week has been in the upper 60's and the bees are out looking. Pressure is on all my hives strong and nucs.

Re: Robbing starting, ideas to stop?

Well in case some are fighting and dying. Also it has been warmer than average and they are out foraging, thus dying off correct? Actively bringing in pollen from somewhere here.

Re: Robbing starting, ideas to stop?

Thanks. They are definitely robbers. I have them closed down the best I can. Entrance reducers with robbing screens. I have taped off some joints. The Vicks helps some, and I have wet down the hives....

Re: Robbing starting, ideas to stop?

Thanks. On my last quick check last week all were good. The earliest I will be able to check is Sunday now. I need a short term fix. I thought maybe an open feeder away would give them something to...

    Robbing starting, ideas to stop?

it has been a warm wild winter so far. I have robbing screens on and the entrances down to 3/8". I even rubbed Vicks on the entrances to cover any scents. The robber bees are all over the cracks and...

    Re: Now mating nuc question

Beepro I plan on taking a 10 frame deep and making it into a 4 way for splits. If all goes well the mini will be to raise queens for re-queening.

    Re: Now mating nuc question

I have built a five frame nuc size box that the mini nuc frames go perpendicular to the traditional way. I plan on setting them on top of my current nucs in the spring. This is so I can get them...

    Insulation under hive cover

Did some quick research on bubble foil under hive cover. Some positive and negative reviews on using it. It is fairly cheap compared to rigid foam board. 2'x25' at Lowes for $23. Most of what I read...
