Re: Efficiency of a bee yard question

I also recall reading that empty drawn comb actually stimulates foraging behaviour. I definitely speeds up drying the honey down. Lots of factors here.

Re: Efficiency of a bee yard question

8lbs of honey to 1lb of wax is the number most commonly used, though there isn't great supporting research. The bees are very efficient with wax. ~6 medium frames can be drawn out with a lb of wax.

    Re: Nature vs Nurture

I can see how AI could be useful for trait isolation or to bring in new genetics through drone semen, but an AI definitely doesn't indicate "well-bred". Genetic diversity is critical to colony...

I have also gone with A, but found they aren't really strong enough. I have had better luck combining them with their neighbour after cutting out the cells. I might try A again and feed them pollen...

How many hives are you planning on having? Are you going to be comfortable adjusting or cutting out soft comb when they get it wrong? Do you plan on using a motorized extractor? I found that while...

Re: Let's make a better vaporizer

Thanks! Does it attach to the heat gun with friction? or is there a clamp or set-screw? I use the dribble method now when wrapping the hives in early November, but I hate breaking the propolis seal...

Re: Let's make a better vaporizer

Bernhard, does it mechanically attach to the heat gun or do you hold the gun in one hand and the vaporizer in the other? How long do you vaporize for? Do you run the heat gun from a generator?

I found Ernesto Guzman's book helpful:

Do you think your "mediocre" queens were poorly raised? If not, I can't see how a strong cell builder is going to give you any better performance than what you have already. If you think your...

Joerg, you won't have enough air velocity. You need high velocity and volume to blow the bees out.

What are your mite levels? Low production from populous colonies can often be caused by high mite loads.

3 or 4 mediums is fine. If they have brood in the third medium, they probably don't have enough stores at this point. I am not that familiar with your climate, but in my area I would want 3 mediums...

Friction plate/disk? Your picture isn't very good.
  24. Re: How to combine a weak colony to a strong one?

Yes. Removing the queen from the strong hive for about 24 hours before the combine, wouldn't hurt either, but I wouldn't bother.
