  1. Re: Commercial storage of numerous drawn comb frames (wax moth)

Re: Considering switching to Oxalic Acid

I may do one or a series of treatment depending on what I find in the brood, if it's a lot of mites (i.e. opening brood and seeing mites in many, many cells) a series........ a mite in a cell here or...

According to the EPA representatives who were present at the Md. State Beekeepers Mtg. on 02/15/14. OA is no longer listed as a pesticide and they (EPA) are actively pursuing its use as miticide and...

As we all know, mites love to breed in drone brood over worker brood. Therefore, when I'm going thru my hives, I randomly open drone brood. If I see a...

VM's explode this time of year. Brood rearing is decreasing and the mites are "out-rearing" the bees. Be very careful with MAQS. Make sure your o/s temps are within the range recommended for using...

Re: Considering switching to Oxalic Acid

    Pros:
    1. It's cheap to treat (runs, based on my math, about $0.25 per hive per treatment)
Answer: Probably about 10 cents per treatment is more likely. Cheap by any measure.

  20. Re: Oxalic acid treatments...vaporization...my 1st experience doing it...

There are always mites in a hive, that's just a given now. Personally, I treat when I open drone brood and see mites. For me that's the definitive test as whether to treat.
  21. Re: Oxalic acid treatments...vaporization...my 1st experience doing it...

Right around Thanksgiving is a PERFECT time to treat! The hive is basically broodless and OAV at that time will kill greater than 95% of the phoretic mites. As long as temps are right above 40f, you...

I always test for mites prior to treating. However, if you are NOW above your threshold of mites, if were I, I'd do the 3 treatments........
