  1. DO I need to treat first year package bees for mites?

I assume the answer is no because they have not had enough time to establish themselves?

What % of the comb must be capped?

I have waited until now to pull my supers. Out of 30 medium frames 20 are 95% capped. 5 are 50% capped and 5 are 20% capped. This makes an overall 75% capped rate.

    For Pete's sake!?! Missing honey.

So, I have 5 established hives. 3 weeks ago I looked in and all the frames in my supers had nectar or capped honey to one extent or another. One hive had even capped an entire medium 10 frame super....

    Well, that is disappointing.

So, my spring was going gang buster. 2 STRONG hives and 3 packages installed on 4/5/14 Everything was great. The last two days have seen freezing temps in NC. I go to find 2 package hives frozen to...

Re: Suggestions on Fighting Hive Beetles?

So, does anyone know where the larva leave the hive? I am catching many in the freeman trap. Is that virtually all of them or do some exit the front of the hive?

Re: Suggestions on Fighting Hive Beetles?

I wonder if this will fit on the Freeman bottom board. Seems to me the combo would be great.

    Re: Hive Beetles/Oil Traps/Beetle Larva

Absolutely covered. FULL of bees. I will look Wed to see if they are concentrated on a frame or perhaps all are being driven to the bottom?

    Re: Hive Beetles/Oil Traps/Beetle Larva

Here is my theory: The adults hang at the top of the hive and end up in the oil when entering the hive. The larva migrate down and end up in the oil?

    Thoughts?

    Hive Beetles/Oil Traps/Beetle Larva

OK, I have two VERY strong hives. I also have Freeman traps on the bottom. I am catching no adult beetles but the oil tray has many beetle larva in it. Is this the normal deal? Beetles lay eggs, they...

    Re: reusing pulled frames

I just cut out the webbed areas and they just rebuild them. I freeze and reuse em all and it seems to work every time.

  14. Beekeeping for idiots. . . starring . . . .Splorndle!

    Just a few pro tips:

    1. After a few years if you are feeling like a good beekeeper remember on that new hive full of expensive package bees...you must remove the cork or the queen cannot get out....

Re: SHB Boom at Summer's End

I have added Freeman bottom board traps and they have almost eliminated the beetle issue. I had two hives infested and slimed. I saved the frames by freezing them for a week each and putting them in...

    Re: Guard Star

I have used guardstar, the beetle blaster, home made CD case traps etc and the number 1 most effective is the screen bottom board traps. Eliminates the problem.

  20. When is the best time to treat for mites?

Both of my hives have good numbers but there is a significant mite count. I can wait till the correct time. The question is when is the right time in North Carolina?

    Slimed!

Opened my formerly strongest hive today an the hive was slimed by hundreds of hive beetle larva. Turns out this hive, like my other, swarmed and failed to re-queen itself. So, a couple of questions....
  22. Re: 2 Swarms, now few bees and zero eggs or brood.

Thanks guys. I am moving brood tomorrow.
  23. Re: 2 Swarms, now few bees and zero eggs or brood.

3 weeks. And yes, 2 swarms from same hive. Watched it happen.
  24. 2 Swarms, now few bees and zero eggs or brood.

    Now what?

No queen. No eggs but on the bright side no laying workers. I have 2 other hives in good shape. Do I take a frame of eggs away from one of the other hives and hope for the best?...
