  1. Re: This has got to be laying workers...now what?

No brood, larvae, eggs, or sign of the queen, and it's been 2 weeks. The number of bees seems to be decreasing but is still likely close to 1000. I hesitate to shake them out yet because at least...
  2. Re: This has got to be laying workers...now what?

In the late fall I did use powdered sugar to dust each of the hives, but never gave granulated sugar. There are still quite a few bees left in that hive. I'll check it again later this week and see...
  3. This has got to be laying workers...now what?

We finally had some warm weather here in the Piedmont and I was able to get into a few of the hives. During the inspection of my Cordovan hive, I did not see the queen, larvae, or capped brood. What...

Re: Wind Chill - Cover or not?

I never ended up putting blankets on them and left them as they were in the original image. 55 degrees out today and they are just fine, thanks!

Wind Chill - Cover or not?

I have 3 hives and we are getting hit in Piedmont NC by some winds and will soon be in single digits (maybe negatives) this evening. I realize condensation is a problem in hives and that you need...
  6. Overwinter in a doublestack Nuc or 10 Frame deep?

I made a split from my Carnie hive in mid-July and they seem to be doing great. Since we are nearly in September, I was wondering if I should move them into a 10 frame deep body or leave them as two...

    Re: hive bein robbed

Make a robbing screen. I had the same thing happen to a new Nuc I made. I closed up the hive (even the small hole in inner cover) and reduced entrance to 1/2" or whatever the smallest size is. They...

    Re: Robbing sucks....

Should I put them on all of the hives? Or just the Nuc that is getting robbed.

When you guys feed, do you put screens on all the hives?

    Robbing sucks....

Made a new Nuc about 4 days ago and everything seemed fine.

I noticed today that there was some fighting going on in front and that there were several bees hovering around the sides, top, and...

What is the best way to feed a nuc? Boardman? or inverted jar/chick waterer over frames with Nuc box around it?

    Re: Nuc made....now what?

    They seem crowded...

after opening it up this morning 20 or so bees flew out and all seemed fine. Now I have two basball size clusters at the entrance and the inner cover hole. I have an entrance...

    Nuc made....now what?

I decided to make a Nuc from my carniolan hive today (about 4:30pm) so they can raise a new queen and to break the mite cycle.

I pulled 5 deep frames from the hive:
    1 - 80% capped honey
    3 - well...

I calibrated the refractometer with Extra Virgin Olive oil so it read 71.5 on the Brixx scale. Here is the view through the refractometer for the 18.3% honey....did I read it right?

    Re: Reverse Split Advice

So unless nothing is blooming, don't feed? Will they be able to draw wax with so little coming in?
  22. Re: What do u do with your honey supers after you extract?

Why spray for waxmoths? I thought they went for the pollen in the frames, not the wax itself...if they are cleaned thoroughly by the bees do you need to do anything except stack and store?

    Re: Reverse Split Advice

When I take the queen and 5 frames, I am planning on replacing them with foundationless frames (checkerboarded).

Should I feed the hive while they are drawing on them? There is no flow right now...
  24. Re: What do u do with your honey supers after you extract?

I had one hive last year that made it through the winter that was in a good position to make honey....added two more hives to the yard this year and will be getting them ready for winter.

    So yes,...
  25. Re: What do u do with your honey supers after you extract?

I use an empty deep box and put it on top of the inner cover, then put the frames in that and cover it. Allows the hive I took the honey from to get a little back and store it and it makes the frames...
