  1. Re: Shriveled Wings & Dying Bees - Will the Hive Make it!

All you can do is treat and hope for the best. If anything, it is a good learning experience.

Benedryl right away after the sting (after you remove the stinger correctly) will help a great deal.

Re: last hive cut out of the year for me

Real nice brood pattern. Keep us in the loop on how these bees (hopefully) continue to survive.

    Re: first cut out

You have a doomed hive if there is no queen this time of year. It will take about two weeks to attach the combs to the bars.
    Good luck with the bees.

It is one of the best things about beekeeping IMO.
Try making your own maple syrup... it is the BOMB!

    Re: mineral oil

I have been using the FGMO and a fogger for three years now. It keeps the mites in check to levels that are acceptable. My bees are healthy and prosperous. Bees don't seem to mind the fogging.
    I...

    That can't be normal.
  8. Re: Getting real tired of melting down capping on the stove..other options??

Unfortunately, there is no simple, easy way to melt wax. It's time consuming and a bit messy. It is what it is.
I extract in July and have plenty of time to use my solar wax melter. Some days I...

Remove and rubberband everything into a lang and feed, feed, feed.
    Nothing to lose here.

    Re: Super Hot Hive

Has #3 been robbed lately? Maybe have pests (SHB or Varroa) driving them nuts? Is the hive queenless? Any signs of skunks messing with the hive? Stores low?
May not be a queen issue.
  12. Re: When to reduce entrances for winter prep?

I run mine 4" wide all year. I will put the mouse guards on in about a month.

    Re: Late August swarm

I have heard of two queen hives before, this may be a first for me. I havent seen a hive perform like this in a few years.
  14. Re: There has to be a better way (moving hives)

Move them at night with one of these and two people. At least it works well for me.

    Re: Bees not storing honey!!

Drawn comb is equivalent to gold to a beekeeper. I know that is not the case in your scenario however. You may have to look elsewhere to suppliment the winter stores for the bees. I should ask... are...
  18. Re: What size hardware cloth to keep mice out?

I've used 1/4" before, but removed two vertical (a few inches apart) wires to make the openings 1/4" x 1/2". Still made it hard to remove the dead bees.
I now switched to 1/2" for this winter...

    Re: Foundation vs Foundationless

Foundationless in the brood chambers, foundation in the honey supers. Most of my brood chamber comb is from removals.

Re: Combining vs killing failing hives?

The queenless hives (2) act just like the queenright hives right next to them. Population is about the same. These hives are all cutouts from this year so there is no telling how old the queens were....

    Late August swarm

I received a call from a fellow beekeeper in late August (I mean REAL late, like the 28th?) that his hive swarmed and he wanted me to capture it.
The swarm was about the size of a volleyball, so I...

Re: Combining vs killing failing hives?

Glad you brought this up. This time of year especially up north, there is no time to requeen. This is mainly the reason we have "failing" hives right now..... well... for me anyhow. Queenless...

    Re: uniting hives

Two sheets of newspaper will slow the "chew through" to about 3 days. This will make them re orient to their new diggs most often.

Re: Two hives or one to start

Always start with 2. This way you can pull from the other hive if needed and you can compare the two hive to each other as far as progression goes.
  25. Re: Hive body count reduction for wintering ... question!

3 mediums = brood chamber, 1 medium winter stores. 4 total is how I like to overwinter a strong colony. Smaller pops. will require less of course.
