  1. Poll: Re: For the hobbyists: do you use any chemicals with your bees?

I use no chemicals. If my bees die, then that's the way it is. I'm raising survivors which will live and work well in Central VA.
  2. Why do some people advocate garlic powder in powdered sugar treatments for varroa?

Some people advocate using garlic powder is conjunction with powdered sugar treatments for varroa. I cannot find any evidence that the treatment is more effective by adding garlic powder. Yet some...

Re: i found some ferrals , what to do now?

I would do swarm traps- you'll get the queen eventually.

    Re: Self-sustaining beekeeping

I'm starting this up with a few friends- I like queen swapping where swapping queens or queen cells will increase and diversify the gene pool. I would like the break the "buy a package" mentality and...

    Re: Clipping queens?

I wouldn't want it done for reasons stated above. I didn't think people did it much anymore.

Re: Raising cells in a nuc

The first time I did queen rearing I used a 5 frame nuc- they made 2 queen cells- my goal was to make a split and added the larvae (Jenter system) in the nuc so they would raise their own queen....

    Re: queen rearing preferences

I don't graft- I use the Jenter system- and will try the Nicot system this year as well.

    Re: Mountaincamp Revisited

    Interesting discussion!

My philosphy is is leave as much honey as I can for the winter, and use the Mountaincamp as a last resort, and not as common practice. If any die out, then I can extract...

Re: Recognizing 1 Day Old Larvae

I used the Jenter system last year- left the cage in the hive for the bees to rear the larvae I didn't use- well didn't pull it out for awhile- all filled with honey and capped. So I'll buy another...

Re: Recognizing 1 Day Old Larvae

I can barely see them- they look like the width the hair on your hand. That's why I don't graft.

Re: Obtaining a Hive in Winter

If you have a day like today- you could have a good chance of what the others have stated. On the other hand- the warmer it is- the more bees that will be flying around.

    Re: Plastic foundation vs beeswax

In my opinion- there's no definitive answer- it's whatever works for you. I like plastic because it's easy to use and I don't like fooling with cross-wire. I use it for the reasons Brent Bean stated....

    Re: Queen Outside the Hive???

Perhaps a small swarm took up residence underneath your hive?
  14. Re: Witntering Hives - Screened Bottom boards/Inner Covers replacing them with Wooden

I leave my SBB open- last year I bought a vinyl floor remnant and cut pieces that fit inside the SBB to close off the opening. I did this around Feb/March just to see if it works. Didn't see a...

    Re: Combining a queen castle

Same here- I'm fattening up for winter-

Regarding feeding the 4 frame nucs- they need more food and I'll modify the top cover for 2 top feeders and perhaps place sugar in the bottom- does anyone...

    Re: Combining a queen castle

Ok- I made 2- 4 frame nucs in the queen castle. I wanted to slowly combine them, but I wouldn't have time to get into these hives for about 10 days due to upcoming work and family commitments. Here's...

    Re: When to move hive

I'd move them in Feb/March when they're at their lightest. The hives can be pretty heavy this time of year.

    Re: Combining a queen castle

Never thought of that- I'm wondering how I would feed it leading into winter. They have small entrances and I don't have any feeders that would work with this setup. Sugar patties on the frames?

    Re: Too late to requeen?

I don't think it is- I'm going to do it this weekend. You'll have a break in rearing brood, which is good varroa mite control.
