    Re: OAV treatment

Sure makes it easier to slide in from back and just rag the entrance and rag around the back entrance where you slide it in. Whatever entry way is easiest.

Re: Treat or not to treat for mites

since I got back into the girls after not having to worry about pests with them but an occasional ant or wax moth and my 1st loss to mites and then 1 to SHB, the treatment free, organic, all natural,...

Re: Lost 2 of my 4 hives already

Did mite treatment (OAV)yesterday after the same 5 day cycle treatment in November. This morning I have had a huge mite drop in all my home hives dying in the oil. I also changed out oil cause of...

    Re: screened bottom boards

Mites and SHB made me rethink purpose of bottom boards. Great for mite counts and also passive extermination of SHB. I do have to decant moisture and wind driven rain from the oil trays every few...

    Re: screened bottom boards

You have it figured out perfectly. If you want an oil tray also under the screen, knock the back 3/4 off and tack the screen on that replacement 3/4 strip 1st and then install the sides.
    I use 3/8"...

    Re: hive beetles

Screened bottom boards with oil pan is only sure way to keep them in check.
    Strong hives helps.
    Full sunshine.
    Small entrance.
    Salted soil around hives.
    Smash everyone you see.

    Camellia,Loquat attack!!

Here's some shots of my bees going after the Camellia and Loquat blooms in my home apiary.
Nice here today mid to upper 70's. Nice SE Texas December weather. Bees also have a little pollen coming...

Re: Packages or 3 frame nucs?

If your apiary has all mediums already and the new nucs are loaded with capped brood after doing an inspection then I would say you would be better off on a successful colony start. Either way will...

    Re: Hive orientation?

SW would be better than anything north. I try and place mine (entrance)facing east to south east. The morning sun hitting the entrance will activate the bees sooner and warm the entrance somewhat. I...
  12. Re: What are your thoughts on using medium supers exclusively?

I use 8 frame mediums. For weight and standardization. 50 years ago I used 10 frame deeps. Busted my back in 84 and got rid of all that equipment and helped pay the medical bills. 1 back injury or...

Re: November 30 and they're bringing in pollen

I'll have to try stripping leaves off a new branch and dip it rooting dust and stick it in ground.
I know the 420 gang do theirs that way. But that's weeds.
4 years is not a long wait for any fruit...
  15. Re: Wax moth damage in dead hive.....and other hives have little brood

Google Lone Star Farms and find someone in your area and give em a call for some knowledge. To me it sounds like the mites have done their thing. Lots of larvae on the bottom board could be a number...

Re: best place for beginner to buy nucs?

    Hi east texas!!
I know Smith County has a good beekeeper association. Be aware of hive trucks and large numbers of hives in your area and just stop them and ask also.

    welcome!!!

Re: November 30 and they're bringing in pollen

    Re: North Texas and Lumber

I've used Cutlist for layout for medium hive bodies or supers and can get 19 supers out of 2 sheets of 3/4" A/C plywood.
No waste at all. Use a 60 or 72 tooth carbide blade and it smooths the cuts...

Re: Hive humidity - how much is too much?

Houston area average Humidity is 75%. So I imagine the inside of the hives are always higher in this area. October the humidity is lower but not by much. Before A/C and central heat, our walls always...
