Good question. I just popped two likely AHB swarms in a box and requeened them two weeks ago. Like you, I would suspect they would kick them out earlier but I havent noticed it.

We have a good mesquite bloom now just south of you in San Antonio. Tallow is over here. Had an extended tree catclaw bloom that is just no ending. Good luck.

5 gallon bucket of water mixed with 5 cups hand dishwashing liquid poured into entrance after dusk should do it.

Seems to me the largest factors on SHB populations are ground moisture and temperature. They like hot and wet. I have not noticed a major difference between very rocky soil, rich black dirt and sand.
