Re: Sugar water instead of a smoker?

I have found the perfect smoker material. I have horses, so I have plenty of horse "apples". When they are a few months old and turning white, they smoke wonderfully, with no poop smell. :lookout:

Re: Sugar water instead of a smoker?

I had a beek use liquid smoke in a spray bottle. Smelled good and seemed to keep them at bay.

    Foundationless frame question

I am trying this year to use foundationless frames in my super. I alternated the frames in between foundation frames. It took them a while to get started "pulling" the foundationless frames. But now...

    Re: grouchy bees

My bees didn't even allow us into the garden. They would dive bomb us and then follow us for at least 100' from the garden before they backed off. Then once in a while, one would come out front of...

    Re: First time wax moths

I lost my hive last winter, and just stacked the empty boxes in a stack. When I went to put a nuc in this spring, SUPRISE!!! Frames were full of wax moths. I threw them all in the freezer, and when...

    Re: grouchy bees

I went thru that exact thing last month. I finally traded my hive for a new nuc, and am happy as a bee. The beek that traded them said they may have been bored. But I think they were crowded and...

    Re: Oak tree honey?

My area is primarily Oak trees. The supplier of my nucs says that our bees get constipated from eating their oak honey, and that I should put a little bleach in their water trough to help them...

    Re: Swapping hive bodies (Advice)

I do it just a little different. When I check my hives, I find it easier to have an empty box next to the full box. Be it a super or medium or deep. I pull and check frames and place them in the...

    Re: What's your approach?

Well, I wouldn't want someone come kick my door in just to say hi and have coffee. I assume that the girls feel the same way. I use very little, if any, smoke and talk to them as I lift covers and...

    Re: High Altitude Outyard

Not to pop anyones bubble, but I'd put up some warning signs on the fence. Some Looky Loo is gonna come by and wanna see up close what's going on. POW! Been there, done that. I get hit by my fence...

    Removing residual bees

As per my post a week ago, I had an angry hive. I swapped it out with another beek for a nuc. He ended up with about 20 of bees. Good swap on my part. I now have a nice mello hive of nice girls. I...

OK, UPDATE. Had a beek come out yesterday and open the hive. Shallow was full of capped honey. The deep was full of capped & un-capped honey, brood, eggs and not much empty space. Suggested that...

The 4 drawn, empty frames were from last years hive, and I put them in when I placed the nuc. When hive was checked 3 weeks ago, had a few emptyish frames and capped brood cells. Saw the queen then....

I placed the nuc I got this year into the drawn comb deep from last year with a shallow with a few capped honey cells from last year also. It had been robbed, so it was a mess. But they cleaned it...

    Re: Angry girls

I have thought about the smell issue. It is while we are working in the garden that the "attacks" happen. But the ones doing the stinging seem to be flying in, not from the hive area. It is when I...

    Angry girls

Last year, (my first year), I had a wonderfully docile and mello hive. In February, they decided to leave my hive for places unknown. So I bought another nuc this spring from the same beekeeper. But...

Re: What are there tiny red bugs on my hive?

We get them here in northern calif. We call them oak mites. Find them in the oak leaves during summer and fall. They bite a little, bit so does everything ?

Re: Do i have a problem?
