  1. Re: Tree trap out - found a virgin queen today - flew off the frame

Quick question about your setup.... Is your box attached to the tree, with the funnel coming directly into it? I am trapping bees out of a tree in this fashion, and would love to get the queen.

Thanks for the quick replies. I hope a swarm didn't check me out and then move in somewhere else. The activity has noticeably decreased since I posted this thread, and no swarm has shown up yet.

    Scout Bee Question

I have several swarm traps out, and have seen lots of activity on a couple of them. My question... If scout bees are checking out a bait box, does that mean a swarm is clustered up nearby? Will they...

I like using hive bodie themselves, because they are standard equipment. It seems like most of the stuff I build for certain things doesn't get used much, and spends most of its life in the shed....

Re: 5 gal bucket bee vac

This setup is hard to beat, and the mini Shop Vac was on sale for $20. This entire setup was maybe $30 total, and all of the wood for the cage is scrap.

I have considered going with the hive body...

Re: Sizes: Commercial Lumber vs Traditional Lumber

    Cyan,

I have been using non-standard freebie lumber for nuc boxes, covers, bottoms. I build these pieces for nearly nothing, other than time. Having these knockaround boxes for transport, swarms,...

    Re: Newly build hex hive

I suggest using something like this. You can make it hex shaped and shorter, but then make a screen ladder so they don't drown or draw comb in it. I just built 4 of these last night to give them a...

    Cutout Hive Volume

This winter taught me that I need to be doing many things differently. All of my bees were from swarms and cutouts, mostly cutouts. I am questioning whether or not there is too much comb being saved...

After losing my bees this year, one of my system changes is to feed swarms and cutouts immediately to help jump start their development.

Up in NY? How many boxes do you leave on for winter? Do you push them together to share heat? I am intrigued by this idea.
