    Re: Pail Feeder Question

I don't bother putting a box over mine, just invert over a migratory cover with a hole in it.

    Re: Mowing the lawn

Let me tell you a story. My first year I brush hogged around my hive all spring. No problems. Of course the hives were growing all that time. As August rolled around it got hot, and dry, and...

Re: Cypress Hive bodies warped - help

Almost all cypress today is second growth with a lot of sapwood. It will rot just like pine. Old growth heartwood is the stuff that doesn't rot. You won't find much of it in beehives. Timber...

Re: Cypress Hive bodies warped - help

Asemble with clamps. If they rock after assembly, stack some weight on top of them as the glue dries. If they aren't perfect, the bees will fill in the gaps. If they aren't the correct dimensions,...

    Re: Anxious new beekeeeper

You shouldn't need to feed pollen substitute. Houston has plenty of pollen year around. Look for pollen coming in on the bee legs.

Re: Well that was quick-Lost queen

Kevin, I'm right down the road in Union Valley off 276. I have another beekeeper friend in Poetry and Union Valley. We are both all mediums. You may have received a virgin shaken in with your...
  8. Re: How much honey is consumed over winter months? Not much

Location, location, location. Down here they fly all winter except for short periods (less than 5 days at a time) of cold or ice. They eat and nothing is blooming. Biggest comsumption occurs when...

    Re: Strange spring

We had the same thing in east Texas. 3 weeks of rain with no sunshine shut everything down. Now we're two weeks or so behind our normal bloom schedule. No swarm calls the first week of April says...

Re: Do you put weight on your top covers?

I don't put anything on mine. We regularly get thunderstorms with 80 mph straight line winds. A nice spring day will be 35 mph. My migratory tops are flat plywood with no overhang. I have never...

    Re: two questions

I'll comment on #2. The bees could care less whether you have an angled landing board or any landing board. Those are to make the beekeeper feel good, not the bees.

Re: When to split hive Oklahoma

I split one Saturday. My hives at Paris (just across the Red River from OK) had plenty of drones.

Re: dark capped honey frame ??

Fall honey here is usually dark. It comes from aster and golden rod. You can usually tell whether the honey is dark or not. Even on a old frame with dark comb, the caps will be lighter if the...

    Re: So..what happened?

Now you know why most of us won't waste much time or gas chasing swarms. They are always an iffy proposition.
  17. Re: Ever see an entire frame of drone brood next to a frame of worker brood?

Yes. I move them to the outside or up to honey storage and ignor them. The queen is happy with her drone supply and keeps on laying workers.

Re: Screened bottom or solid ?

They both work just fine. I like screens in my climate, but I still have some solids too. I think one box hives benefit from solid bottoms early in the year, it makes keeping the brood warm a...

Re: I can't decide on what extractor to buy ?

Buy a used one if at all possible. Buy a radial and one with a motor. Don't get hung up on a particular brand and don't worry about metal guage. Stainless is good, but galvanized worked for 50...

I have pretty good success just breaking out the wedge and leaving the step for them to build on. It doesn't take much.

Spring is late in northeast Texas

1st of April and no sustained flow is pretty unusual. 1st week of April is usually when my phone starts ringing for swarm calls, but I'm not expecting it will this week. Crimson clover is nowhere...
  22. Re: SAE 30 Lawn Mower Oil for a small piston air compressor?

Get a good synthetic compressor oil. You can get Dewalt off of eBay. Most parts houses also stock compressor oil.

Re: Bottom Boards Loaded with Sugar

Not sure what the hardware cloth was about, but wet newspaper usually works. Early spring was quite warm here. That may have had a effect. Wetting the sugar well to harden it is required.

Actually, Greenville, Tx had electricity in 1890. Before that they were run off a line shaft and a steam engine, still not much difference.

Here is an image prior to 1900 published in Harpers of...
