Re: Comb from cutout, harvesting the wax

Probably just rubber band it to a frame and use it. Won't the bees clean the cells out? I don't know, give it a try, just an idea. Let me know if it works.

Re: How to get my feral colony into a box?

A modified Hogan trap should do it. Frame or two of brood and a funnel trap. Piece of cake. Bret
  3. Re: Cutting out a queen cell on plastic foundation?

I have a buddy with plastic foundation, and we were talking about this very thing the other day. He says he's going with bent wire foundation from now on. I'd be interested in knowing how experienced...
  4. Re: I have a cut out, can I Hogan trap out first?

I did ask, and I do appreciate the response. I'll save the trouble of a trap out and go straight to the cut out. How many frames of brood do you guys typically put in the hive with the cut out? Bret
  5. I have a cut out, can I Hogan trap out first?

I have a cut out to do at an old house that is to be torn down later this year. Hive entrance is about 3' off the ground, very easy access, so here's what I'm thinking. Hogan trap, with brood and...

    cut-out temps 40 degrees

Can I cut a hive out when it's in the 40s in the morning, and reaching 60+ in the afternoon? Could I vacuum the bees, get them hived, and back to my bee yard and let them go to work?

Hose is around 10-12' long, and 1.5" diameter. I just carry the buckets close to where I need to work and when it get's 1/4 full or so, pour the bees in a deep hive box. I"m a hack...

    Re: Bee vac

I made a little bee vac from the shop vac you set on top of a 5 gallon bucket. It's 6.5 amps and works good for me. I taped two buckets side by side, removed the pour spout lid on the catch bucket...
  10. Re: what I should add a honey super or brood box

What GaryG74 said. Just add a box. The bees determine if it's a brood box or a honey super, then you'll know what to call it after they fill it with brood, honey, or both. They just want more room,...

Re: too early to feed/add box?

East central Oklahoma cwood6, close enough to you, just on the right side of the Red River :) I'm going to add a box and start feeding too. They're packed in there. Just one box and one hive out of 3...

    too early to feed/add box?

Can I start feeding sugar water and add a box to my hive? It is full of bees and I know I need to add a box, but when? They're carrying in pollen. Is it too early to feed sugar water? If it is too...

Re: They swarmed help me learn from this.

Maybe take a few frames from the booming hive and put them in the one that's drawing weird comb. Help lagging hive catch up and give the bigger hive something to do.
Start a nuc. Take brood and...

Re: How many bees are too many for one box

I'm a newbee so I don't know what the "rule" is for adding another box but it seems you made the right call on the 2 nucs before so whatever gauge you were using seems to work. How did you determine...

Re: Work came to a screeching halt!

Good deal! Looks like a nice colony to have. Do you look for the queen or just vac her up if you don't see her? How do you hive them? Just pour them in with your frames you made from their comb and...

Re: how to collect these bees?

Used a beevac to get all the bees, it worked great. I use two 5 gallon buckets for my beevac and I was really happy with it. It didn't kill hardly any at all.

Re: how to collect these bees?

Hey, that's the way to go. I'm going to see the carpenter that was going to remove the wall and do the repairs anyway, so just get the brood/honey and bees/queen, help him put it back together, and...

    how to collect these bees?

Homeowner wanted the comb removed from their house. Thought the bees would leave if they were cut off with this trap then they could proceed with comb removal. Told me the bees wouldn't leave,...
  19. Re: Best option for getting a laying worker hive to accept a swarm queen?

So you're combining bees from the same hive and still need to use newspaper? That's good to know. Last weekend I pulled 3 frames of bees and the queen from a Hogan trap I have (my first trap-out),...
