  1. Re: Tree trimming company called and I ran to their aid.

My brother and I had an almost identical adventure last year east of Lafortune Park about this time. It also was huge. Hope it works out great for you.

Re: Building a new swarm trap

I know paint smell is a no no. I painted mine with krylon and left out in sun and weather for a week. Then got after it. I paint a lighter shade camo pattern. That's for people. By the way get...
  3. Re: Any tips for setting a trap for a know feral hive?

Why not "Cleo" it and use a trap to get starts and leave them early enough to prepare for winter. You get some of them and don't take the seed. I would think instinct would dictate they travel a good...

Re: Plug the swarm in a new hive?

Let them do their thing for a few days after they move in. Then close off the hole with screen at dark. Then move home to where you want them and transfer to a hive body. Do not close them up after...

Re: Plug the swarm in a new hive?

Did you transfer their comb to the new hive ? It's touchy when to switch them out. Day or two or better yet when they are bringing in pollen. Close up with ventilation in morning before daylight....

Re: Moving a swarm trap a short distance?

You wait till they are settled ( bringing pollen in etc...) then after dark screen the hole take them where you want them and the next morning open them up and hive them. The confinement and...

    Re: swarm trap removal ?

I like the first option. I pick up my traps after dark and get them to the yard. Always try to do that when I can commit to doing transfer first thing. Then do transfer/cutout. They all reorient and...

    Re: Theoretical Question

They build comb very quickly and typically there will be eggs day 3 or earlier so brood in 4 more. I do use one frame brood comb and 2 foundationless frames. I never add brood. Knock on wood I have t...

    Virgin queen or not

Got a large swarm in a trap. Figure from the size it is a prime. I brought it to the yard and planned on hiving them tomorrow. Then I notice this afternoon drones filing in there like crazy. So am I...

    Re: one taken over

When I trap it's usually by a creek. I unpack the 2 frames and toss it into the creek. Wash it out a bit. Their queen and eggs go bye bye. Then repack the frames, rebait and go again. Quick fix.

Re: Rigging the election? (artificial quorum)

Not to be rude. While you are doing all that rigging we will have caught several swarms just by providing the box, dark comb, lgo, queen lure, and decent placement. That's all they really want in the...

Re: How long to leave in the trap

Do a search on that topic and you will get a lot of info. Short answer is that if you confine them after dark on a cool evening you can transfer them to a box in the morning wherever you want them....

Re: Swarm Trap plan for spring 2016

One thing that is handy is to carry a spare trap with you that is ready to hang when you remove one with a swarm in it. I have caught up to 4 swarms in a season in two different spots. At least once...

Re: Number of frames in a trap?

I am with Cleo. I put one old brood comb against the wall and two open frames against that. A nail on each end to keep them lined up in transit. Caught a dozen last year with only one with combs...

Just a token amount. The 50 -55 degree mist is just to convince them to go inside. I use it on late caught swarms when the temps are so high that there is night time bearding and hence no easy time...

    Re: Southern CA Desert Swarms

Last year was the 4th of drought conditions here. Caught 2 swarms. Okla also lost something like 62% of hives over winter 2014. This year my brother and I caught 27 between us. I think it illustrates...
