    Re: Extractor replacement bearings?

My homemade 4 frame radial extractor is finished. Dry runs, literally, look great. I'll do a new post with pics and basic design comments. Thanks all for your input. It all went into the design.
  2. Re: 5 gallon buckets- Home Depot or food grade?

My local grocery stores bakery throws 5 gallon frosting buckets out weekly. If I catch them before they toss them I get them free.

    Re: Sellable honey and moisture

Thanks everyone. Are the refractometers you see for around $25 reliable?

    Re: Sellable honey and moisture

Thanks Rader. How about the first question. If it's capped is that mean its good. Or do I need to buy a refractometer? Thanks

    Sellable honey and moisture

Can you assume that if a frame is mostly capped that the moisture content is appropriate bottling and selling? Or should one refract to confirm content. What is best range suitable for selling?

    Re: Oxalic Sublimation Temp?

LanduytG and VodoBaas1, did you use plans from the net or your own design to build your vaporizers? Sounds like yours are electric. I built a simple one out of copper pipe and heat with a torch. If...
  7. Re: What's your strategy for growing your apiaries?

I believe Michael Bush feels the same. Only feed in an emergency. Bees will generally be healthier from nectar and real honey as opposed to table sugar and the stuff it becomes.
  8. Re: What's your strategy for growing your apiaries?

In Michigan I don't believe that a single deep could survive a typical winter, let alone last years winter. Some people were pushing two heavy deeps with a medium super of honey on that! Nebraska...

    Just ordered it. Thanks
  10. What's your strategy for growing your apiaries?

I have 4 hives in my 2nd year. I am interested in learning more about different methods to increase colonies. I realize that just getting them through winter is sometimes the best you can hope for...

    Re: Extractor replacement bearings?

I think I am going to do this. And comments are welcome. I have some 5/8” nylon cutting board. I’ll take a block of that and put a shallow round depression into it and fasten it to the bottom of my...

    Extractor replacement bearings?

I want to build my own extractor and figured manufacturers would offer replacement bearings. But I have not been able to find any searching the web. Anyone know of a source for food grade pilot...
  14. Full supers but not much capped - getting high and heavy

The wisdom of my first year of beekeeping told myself that I should build a hive stand high enough so that I am not bending over so far for those first and second deeps. The wisdom of my 2nd year...

Re: How late do you run swarm traps?

Will they build up winter stores in that time tomcat or will you add them to another hive?

Poll: Re: Rabbet joint for hive boxes

I also cut the ends with a 3/8 x 3/4 rabbet, and leave the sides square. I use Titebond II and coated spiral nails. I also coat the end grain with glue and then 2-3 coats of house paint making sure...

Re: One small closed queen cell.. problem?

BIM, yeah I'm sure it s a q-cell. It's hanging down at a little bit of an angle as opposed to looking like someone stuck a Kix cereal into each cell.

    Thanks for responding Michael.
  20. Re: Day ONE... A couple simple questions...

The queen was in the package for several days already so the three day period is not a hard number. Assuming you removed the cork from the candy end the bees will take of the rest. Tuesday or...

One small closed queen cell.. problem?

I have a first year hive in a single deep that has been doing great. Last week I noticed a small empty queen cell at the top of a frame. Yesterday it was capped but still small and round. It's a...

  23. Re: Supercedure cells? Hive trying to come back?

Its almost 2 weeks since I first discovered three capped queen cells in this struggling hive. I found no queen and a handfull of bees so I added two frames of capped brood with nurse bees.

    Today...
  24. Supercedure cell? 3rd week into new install (pic)

I installed a package of Italians from Georgia 3 weeks ago. It's been very active and on todays inspection found 6-7 seams of bees, brood of all ages, pollen, nectar and capped honey. I did not find...
