Re: March Hive Check - post them here

I started the winter with nine hives and a nuc. I lost four hives. One of the remaining hives is very weak and will probably be dead by the time this latest cold snap ends.

Re: Drought- has it affected your crop?

In this part of Maine the rainfall has been good but I think the early spring affected things. So far I have harvested 1/4 of what I had at this time last year. Goldenrod is out there but I am not...
  4. Re: Is it just me, or is everyone else having to feed their bees this year?

I am having a lousy year here too. Even the bees I keep in Dover, NH did not produce much this year. Goldenrod is my last hope. I placed hives on a nearby farm for the first time this year. The owner...

My milkweed has been in bloom since the 17th and still going strong. The bees love it and I can smell it coming in my office window.

    Re: Basswood blooming in Vermont!!!

I hope there are some near me. So far this year has been a dud for my bees.
  7. Re: What process do you use to clean an extractor after use.

Any time I leave wax or honey out for the bees to clean up all hell breaks loose. I rinse mine out with warm water.

    Candy in queen cages

What is the candy in a queen cage made out of? How do you make it, or is there something else I can use other than going back in a few days and releasing her?

Re: Tattered Wings on new queen.

I have a queen just like that too. The bees are making queen cells in that hive. It is my most productive hive this year so I am planning on removing her and putting in a queen from a nuc. I don't...
  11. Re: What do you use for smoker fuel? Any tips on keeping it lit?

I cut cardboard boxes into 5 inch wide strips then roll them up until it fits snug in the smoker and hold it together with a couple pieces of masking tape. You have to cut it the right way so when it...

Sticky: Re: Please Post your Swarm Dates?

The weather was finally good today. I went to my yard located in Dover, NH and found three swarms in the same tree. I had a feeling one hive might swarm but not all three. Good thing I brought nucs...

    Newspaper Combine

I went to one of my bee yards today and found three swarms hanging in a tree. I was planning on stealing frames from these hives to help along two nucs I overwintered so I had extra equipment handy....

    Queen stinging emerging queen

I was checking to see if a queen hatched yet in a nuc and saw this. A queen was trying to come out of her cell and another queen was trying to sting her.

Re: So they found out you keep bees...

Someone asked me today if I had any raw honey "like they sell at the health food store". I asked if he meant comb honey and he said no it isn't. I don't go to health food stores so I don't know what...

Sticky: Re: Please Post your Swarm Dates?

My nuc swarmed today. Instead of fighting it out one of the queens decided to run. They ended up in a tree 25ft up. I was able to cut the tree down and hive them.
