Re: Bees closing entrance with propolis

my gf's top bar hive has 3-4 holes for an entrance and they open and close them as they see fit. my lang was filled byu a swarm from that hive and they are propolis making machines
  2. Re: You can't teach an old, frame hive beekeeper, new tricks

Also helps if you go all the way to the edge of the bar/frame with the sticks. which is maybe why you have better luck with the foundation since it goes all the way. my lang frames i need 2.5...
  3. Re: You can't teach an old, frame hive beekeeper, new tricks

have had no problems with popsicle stick guides in either our TB or my foundationless lang.

  4. Re: You can't teach an old, frame hive beekeeper, new tricks

Being out of level will cause combs to bend near the end/sides.. being off 45-90 degrees has to do with a building plan gone wrong.. either by the magnetic lines of the earth like someone suggested,...

    Re: Bottom Board Position

i may compromise between the 2 and keep my 4" opening i have put in since the temps are dropping at night. I have it in the bottom open position now.. i haven't decided if i should flip it the...

    Re: Questioning what to do

If they are just honey combs i'd leave it what you want for the winter and harvest a few. they aren't going to build much past it this time of year anyway. harvest the rest after they are motoring...

    Re: Deeps or Mediums

why would you ruin good cedar by painting it.. it is naturally resistant to rot and stuff. you can hardly tell the top bar i built 3 years ago has been outside.
  10. Re: Dead pupae and dead newly emerged bees at and near entrance

I have a few dead semi formed brood get pulled out. usually i notice at night when they drop them on the porch instead of fly them out further. Also had a wax moth larve pulled out the other...
  11. Re: Lots of nectar in hives, but no capped honey yet...

Mine have not done much capping yet either. which is strange because they don't have much fanning either. maybe the cells aren't full enough for their liking yet.
  12. Re: Why are there still so many drones in one hive?

weird... i haven't seen drones is so long.. at least that i've noticed. and definitely not buzzing around the entrance like during the early summer. maybe they migrated north to visit

    Re: 9 frame spacers

Yes, or they will make funky combs that end up being like 1.5 on one frame then a weird gap. need to have them get things established before making extra space
  15. Re: Help: extending my top bar hive

I agree it is probably easier to build a new one that is longer and wider .. 12" top width is very small.

we made ours off the BioBees plans.. 4' long 18" top width and 6-8" bottom width. ...

Re: fall/winter setup with 8 frm medium

Re: fall/winter setup with 8 frm medium

yea, foundationless..so it is a big blank spot. I think i might put one of the upper honey frames back into the 2nd box and take the 2 spares out and either extract them or save to feed back in the...

fall/winter setup with 8 frm medium

Ok, i'm trying to figure out how to best use what i have. right now i have 18 frames drawn out in a 3 box stack. they have basically ignored the top box other than the 2 drawn frames i moved up...

Re: Newbees, Mediums and AFB -- a cautionary tale

even if they don't mix hives in one package they are still taking bees from many different hives and sending them all over the country. you'd figure a larger size operation has less oversight on...

Re: Newbees, Mediums and AFB -- a cautionary tale

How about bee suppliers who do a large amount of splits to make nucs and shake bees from many hives to make packages. Swapping around bees and frames to produce queens and cells. How about all...

no one's posted foundationless pictures in a while so he has to make up his own crap to fill his need to bash the system.

    Re: propolis solvent?

+1 for alcohol or hand sanitizer.. comes right off.. pretty sure my queen is a Caucasian and they lay down beads of propolis anywhere they can so my gloves and hive tool are always covered in it.

I found 9 to be too tight for my liking. even with 1.25 i left it at 8 frames centered and they are fine with it. no burr comb

    Re: Foundationless and Drone Cells

If you wanted to experiment you could move it to an outside position where they are more apt to back fill it.
