  1. Re: Help Preventing Robbing Frenzy during and after honey harvest

I’ve had exactly the same issue, once wet supers went on two of my hives, robbing started immediately. I was trying to apply the same logic, put wet supers back on them at dusk when bees are not...
  2. Free queen - does anybody need a queen now?

Only for those close by - free queen, local pickup only - New Haven county, Connecticut.
One of my hives was robbed completely dry. Small cluster with the queen is still hanging in, but they will...

    Re: Winter prep

Yes to tar paper, 15 pound tar paper is sturdy enough to last few winters. I cut to dimension of two deeps, wrap the hive, use twine to keep the wrap tight but not sealed completely. The air can move...

Re: How is the flow in the NE this year?

Mosherd1 -- may I ask how do you manage your hives? I am using 2 deeps with shallow supers on top, - foundationless frames in supers. So far I got 0 honey in supers.

    Thanks.

Yes, the hives are getting heavier, but are you getting anything in supers yet?

How is the flow in the NE this year?

I am in central Connecticut shoreline, not much honey in supers so far. Is this just me, or is this an overall trend? Should we be expecting more soon?

    Thanks.

Re: Nuc drone layer - why?

The queen was from last summer graft, open mated, not marked or clipped. She developed that nuc from July to Oct in very nice fashion. A lot of bees, they packed the nuc with pollen and syrup honey....

    Nuc drone layer - why?

The queen in one of my overwintered nucs is laying only drones in worker cells. Iíll give her another week and if there is no change Iíll combine with another nuc.

Re: Overwintered a queenless hive - now what?

Let's assume that you have a queenless hive with LW. You could try to give them frame of eggs - but this is not a quick fix, it will take few weeks for them to attempt to rear the queen. I would...

Re: Overwintered a queenless hive - now what?

This is what I would do -- combine, and split after the spring flow.

If you don’t have a new queen right now, combine both hives, and split at later time.
I was in the same situation last year,...

    Re: Reversing in CT

    brendantm130,

I am not reversing this year. In previous years, every time I reversed one of my 2 hives in the spring, that hive developed problems with queen. Maybe this was just a coincidence,...

Re: How to stimulate new nuc to build comb?

    Thank you for replying.
I gave them plenty of syrop, but they ignore it. Both nucs have very young queens, just starting to lay in good numbers.
So if the nectar is still available I should just...

How to stimulate new nuc to build comb?

    Hello there,

I've made couple of 5 frame nucs few weeks ago, moved them to deep boxes two weeks ago. One is doing OK, the other one is not so good -- wax moth has got into this hive.

    Re: No honey in super.

I am not using queen excluder, and there is plenty of room for them to store honey. Most likely I'll try reversing hive bodies to bring brood nest down, and keep pollen/honey on the top.

  24. Re: Q-cell on the drone frame -How to save this hive?
