    Re: quilt box

Just use a medium hive body and a sheet of newspaper. Fill it with sugar. That's the Mountain Camp method. Sugar absorbs the moisture and feeds the bees if they need it.

Re: There has to be a better way (moving hives)

Build bottom boards made for moving. That's what I did. Mine are screened, but you could do solids just as well.
Bottom board is made with two runners cut out of 2x4 on the table saw. Just cut...

    Re: Newbie inner cover question

In the south a migratory top is all you need.
  4. Re: Reduce hive size for winter for late season swarms?

Mountain Camp method of feeding will work for this once winter is starting.
  5. Re: Beekeeping on Bonaire and saving the endangered Yellow-shouldered Amazon parrots

I hope they got in some diving while they were there. I've been diving Bonaire for 20 years. Last time I checked there was one beekeeper on the island.

    Re: Stacked Wet Frames

I'd have wax moth larva after about 3 days.
  8. Re: I am going to need so much advice. Please brace yourselves.

I will warn you, it won't work on every hive every time, especially in south Texas. Some day, you will smoke them as always, and when you pop the top they will be PO'd. At times, more smoke will...

Re: What defines "aggressive behavior" on average

Sounds like a nice easy hive to work to me. If they don't sting your gloves and clothes, you don't have a problem. Later in the year bees are more defensive, bigger hives are more defensive, etc. ...

    Re: Rain and Top Entrances

Not here. I've had hives lay on their sides broken open all winter and they made it just fine. My strongest hives coming out of winter are usually those with the rotten holes in the tops. As long...
  11. Re: I am going to need so much advice. Please brace yourselves.

Old blue jeans or other cotton products make good smoker fuel. They burn slow and cool and stay lit.
  12. Re: I am going to need so much advice. Please brace yourselves.

Stop open feeding. That can promote robbing which makes angry bees. Learn to trust your suit. That's why you wear it. If it isn't working, get one that does. Bees on your veil are not a reason...

    Re: Paper Combine Question

Should be ok. I usually leave a top entrance in hot weather to prevent smothering and heat stress.

    Re: Incredibly aggressive bees

I didn't have much luck with carni's here. When they shut down after the flow in June, the hive size falls off and they get robbed out.

Re: Best Way to Make More Bees?

An alternative opinion (we all have opinions here) would be to slap on another 8 frame box and keep feeding until it is drawn out. You do not need to add pollen in Texas. We have a virtually...
  17. Re: Still making stupid mistakes. Counted my honey before I extracted it....

Around here if you don't pull honey by the 4th of July, the bees turn it into more bees. If you do pull it, they will shut down brood rearing until the fall flow starts. A queen excluder does...

Re: How Long Can I store my Supers

If you have SHB in the area, leaving them unattended is a bad idea. Better to leave them on the hive.

Re: Starting w/ foundationless frames & nuc

They can draw two frames in a few hours if you have enough bees and a flow. You want a high density of bees without them being completely out of space.

It is much easier to take the whole box and move away from the hive location, set it down and wait awhile. The defending bees will mostly go back to the hive location leaving you to work on the...

Re: Epic fail and the nicest bees a guy could have

I don't shade or cover mine. I use a small finishing nail or an old fashioned ice pick to punch my holes. They are under a 1/16th probably.

    Re: Question on bee density

If you have a queen, they will fight it out. Which one will win? I would do two things. One, take away a box on the weak hive. Two, steal some capped brood frames from the nuc and give them to...

Re: Starting w/ foundationless frames & nuc

Don't separate the brood frames into singles. Always have at least two brood frames against each other if possible. Spreading then too thin will set the hive back. Once you get several brood...
