Re: Strange design, have to back-step

You design should work. There is no need to take that comb out and try to hair clip it on. You just need an extra spacer before the next bar to try to get them centered again.

Re: giving shade to a new TBH

I don't see any reason you can't put it up as soon as you are ready. It is certainly warm enough now that the hives don't need any direct sun. I Los like to have the hives get morning sun if possible...
  3. Re: Newspaper combine in a TBH or at least adding more workers to a small colony

How hard would it bee to switch locations of the two hives? That would ensure a bunch of foragers in the new hive.

    Re: Drop bottom

Interesting thread. After building my KTBHs similar to the Bush method (with a 1x10 as a bottom) I was just thinking about spring clean out. Just cleaned out my langs and have an inch or two of dead...

    Re: first successful install

I'm jealous of your window. I wish I had had time to build a window into my hives. I guess there's always next time.

Everything looks good for your new hive. Enjoy.

    Re: Top Bar Design Question

I have bars that are all 1 3/8". Seems like that should work well for the brood area, but I'll want to be carful and have some very small spacers available when my bees get to drawing honey comb. Is...

Be careful, though. It is quite invasive

    Re: What bee is that?

Might just be very young , but looks mite damaged to me. If the mites get your bees you will sometimes see these smaller bees that look sort of "half-baked".

    Re: Combining Queen-right Nucs

Definitely better to sell one and get your money back. Or at least pull the queen to get some cash from that.

If money is no object, you can just do a newspaper combine and one of the queens will...

    Re: Clustering/Festooning on "honey bars"

If you have a local club, it is probably easier to see if anyone needs a queen. In early spring there are usually people looking for queens. You could easily sell it to someone to recoup your money....

Re: 30 hrs after package install.

    Looking good.

I'm jealous of your window. I built my hives in a hurry, so didn't have time for a window. Maybe I can build a new hive with the same dimensions over the year and have a window for...

    Re: Foundationless Frames

Thanks, this was all great advice.
I had another related question. If I use foundationless deeps in the brood nest, will they be stable or will I have trouble with breaking comb. I use mediums for...

Re: My (alternative) theory of the Bush Miracle

The size observations you make are interesting, but probably misleading. A hive of bees is the real 'organism' rather than each individual bee. Body mass helps insulate and keep warm blooded animals...

Re: Food coloring to Spring syrup?

I put red coloring in my syrup. I like being able to see where it goes. I haven't noticed any downside.

I've heard it said that SC bees are smaller but have the same size flight muscles? Is this a documented fact? It seems somewhat counter-intuitive.

I have also seen very differnt sizd bees from my same hives at different times of the year.
  19. Re: Transporting Queen Cells and Making Splits - Advanced Advice Needed

Wouldn't it be better to make the nucs from the mountain hive and bring them down to the valley hive? That way you are transporting nucs with bees and there is no worry about chilling queen cells....
  20. Re: Plans and dimensions for top bar hive follower boards

As for hive length, I like MB's recommendation to make it slightly shorter than 4' so you can use 4' boards to make the cover. I made mine with 19" bars and a 4'x8' sheet makes 4 perfect sized covers...
  21. Re: Plans and dimensions for top bar hive follower boards

If you didn't make the follower boards before making the hives, you can do what I did. Measure how wide the top is. Measure how wide the bottom is. Measure how deep the hive is from the floor to the...

They have the normal ears (which is the top of the side bar) as spacers that lang frames have. I believe the width (including ears) is 1 3/8 inches. They width (including ears) is the exact width of...

    Re: Full Sun?

    Thanks,
I should mention that I decided to give my new hives a head start and cut down a box of medium lang frames, so each will start with 5 bars of comb. That should help them get a quick start,...

    Full Sun?

So, I am finished building my KTBHs and am ready to put them in place and level them in preparation for my bees this weekend. I have my lang hives on a south-facing hill in the full sun. It does get...
  25. Re: Setting up 4 hives this weekend - Introduction of packages question

In my opinion, you're overthinking it. Your layout is fine if that is how you want them. I have found it more convenient to have the hives in one group a few feet apart. The bees really don't mind...
