    Re: Found bees

You never get all the bees. They do not all make it back tot he colony before dark and "Shelter in place" so to speak in this years catch phrase.

You always inform the owner that there will...

    Re: filtering wax

I filter through paper towels the final go round. Just be prepared to lose wax to the paper towels as they clog. Cheap ones work better than expensive ones, you don't want the absorbent. I use the...

    Re: Shouldn't bee's make noise?!?

Late summer with a dearth, drones and no queen -- loud
Early Fall with good queen, low drone counts, fall flow -- quiet

I would think it was pretty normal. Then again maybe you lost your hearing...

    Re: AHHHHH RATS!!!!

It is pretty normal for me to have a colony of carpenter ants living between the telescoping cover and any inner cover that does not have a slot cut in it. The bees and the ants ignore each other. ...

    Re: TF until today

So where did the fabric they sew with come from? GMO Cotton? Nylon made at a factory that dumps its waste on the landscape? Treatment free is just one small link in the overall honey supply...
  6. Re: Why the heck does my bee look charred by a fire?

Looks like possibly mold growing on a dead bee. Definitely not just an old bee. this hive has a Varroa load above any economic threshold. I counted at least 32 mites on the section of stick board...

Re: How did you get into beekeeping?

    As I remember it:
It was a cool breezy afternoon, late spring; I was sitting at a white weathered picnic table outside a little roadside diner. The sun warming my back as the cicada song...

Re: Hive Beetles in Honey Supers

The eggs are not a problem as long as they don't hatch. The larva can mess the honey up. SHB do not destroy comb directly, but their excretement ruins the honey and can be diffictt to clean off the...

Re: Hive Beetles in Honey Supers

Just do not let the supers sit around unextracted for long. If the few you saw laid eggs, they will hatch and then begin to slime stuff up.

    Congrats on the harvest

    Re: Apologies!

Screened bottom board under a new cut out tends to confuse the bees as to where the entrance is. But since you are using a SHB trap under the screen, then it is not really being used as a full open...

    Re: Extraction question

Well, if hot water is a problem and it makes it impossible to get the wax off, what do guys that use hot knives for uncapping do to clean their knives?

I do a cold water rinse on my uncapping...
  17. Re: How can I make hive boxes that are perfectly stackable-a necessary requirement.

Actually, I prefer it. I live in SHB territory and my bees use propolis extensively. If the boxes are gapped a bit (rocking) that gives me a place to force my hive tool into to break the boxes...

  19. Re: Gotta vent about customers' expectations of charges

Re: What kind of plant is this???

There are 15 registered beekeepers in Crestview. ANd probably many more that are not registered, I would think there are managed bees closer to you than you think.

    Car keys!

    Pry frames out
    scrape prolis off
    use as screwdriver

Re: Our understanding of genetics is changing

I suppose that is why the german black bee is almost non-existant in the US then, because it was too gentle.
