    Re: Afternoon From Alabama

Welcome to the forum. I mostly lurk but saw a new Alabamian and wanted to welcome you. You can learn a lot here but you also must pick & choose carefully what works for you.

    Re: proplis on my pants

My specialized bee clothes are the military ACU (Army Combat Uniform). I get them from my brother who is also a beekeeper. Propolis blends in and maybe the bees can't see me.

Re: Am I the only one?

Not trying to keep this thread alive but we are merely witnesses to a major change in language & communication. This happens regularly and us older people always complain and fret about it but it...

    Re: Advice desperately needed

I wish I were closer to Birmingham. I've had swarm traps out but no takers. Regardless of the swarm situation, you can often molify your neighbors with an occasional gift of honey. It has value, plus...
  5. Re: Who has had success sun-bleaching yellow wax to produce white wax?

I boil mine several times in water and each boiling makes it lighter colored, though I haven't tried to make it white. For the first boiling, I strain out debris with a metal strainer, then in...
  6. Re: 5 gallon buckets- Home Depot or food grade?

A local Chic-Fil-A manager is letting me get some of their one gallon mayonnaise buckets the year. Check with a similar establishment near you.

    Why am I suprised?

Two entrances to the small college where I teach were blocked this morning; I thought they were being repaired. Later, I heard a custodian nervously & loudly telling someone about the swarm of bees...

    Re: trees for bees

I live in a heavily wooded area in east Alabama, not a lot of farming here but plenty of pines with mixed hardwoods in the creek bottoms. Poplars are really common and I always suspect that that is...

    Re: Mean beez

Mine are always more agressive in March. I can just watch just a couple of minutes and then start getting some head-butts. Once there's a heavy honey flow they seem to ignore my observation. I can...

    Re: Bees in Cherry Trees

Are those cherry trees on the first post fruit bearing or ornamental? They do seem to be blooming a little early, even for the deep south.

Re: Just put third super on!

If Linden is the same as Basswood, then I'll have to pay more attention to the one in my neighborhood. You can hear the bees 100 feet away when it blooms, but I've only seen bumblebees in it. My wife...

Latest time for starting new hive

I have friends who are interested in beekeeping and have asked me for advice. While I can direct them to starter kits and informative sites & books, I'm worried about them starting too late in the...

    Re: inner cover question

Thanks for the information. I've been considering stapling screen on the hole in the inner covers, now I'm going to modify them for feeding as well.

Speaking of the "right way" to do things, I'm...

Re: Made the front page of the local paper

That is a nice article. It portrays a positive image of beeks in general. Did you really go from two to thirty hives in just 3 years or is that the part she didn't get "mostly right"?

    I liked...

Now that is a sting needing medical attention. Maybe she'll never have to use the epipens, but it'll be nice to know you have them.

    Re: Bee sting

OUCH!!! I get stung regularly with some swelling but I really don't care to get stung somewhere sensitive.
  19. Re: Negative Environmental Impacts caused by Honeybees

Unlike fire-ants and kudzu, honey bees are beneficial non-native species. Once they were introduced to the America's, they swept across the land ahead of the European settlers so I'm suprised that...

    Re: Bee sting

Maybe...I'm just quoting the doctor. He wasn't saying that the current sting could develop a problem, just that with severe swelling there is a 10% chance chance of an adult developing more serious...
  21. Re: What is the average $value of a frame of brood and bees for a split?

That's a good price for the value. They'll return many times that small investment.
  22. Re: What is the average $value of a frame of brood and bees for a split?

This was a nuc from splits containing laying queens from a commercial beekeeper (Ted K.). No frame swap. I kept the boxes and have used them for splits this year.

An allergist spoke at our local Bee Club this month and said that this type of reaction has a 10% chance of eventually developing into a more severe reaction requiring medical intervention. He...
  24. Re: What is the average $value of a frame of brood and bees for a split?

In 2011, I bought two 4-frame nucs for $125 each. This is east central Alabama. I've heard the going price is slightly higher these days but haven't checked it myself.

    Re: Amount of beetles

Last year, my "weak" hive was over-run with hive beetles so I converted the screened bottom board to an oil trap similar to the one in the link I've attached. This guy uses a mixture of petroleum...
