  1. Re: Peach, orange, and cantaloupe mead. Questions on how to start.

Ok, I'll take your advice on the nutrient, acids and tannin. How much pectic enzyme? 3 tsp? If I freeze the fruit mash first will it improve my mead? What about spices like cloves, cardamom seed,...
  2. Re: Peach, orange, and cantaloupe mead. Questions on how to start.

Yes, I've got a 6 gallon primary and 5 gallon secondary. I was planning on crushing the fruit and adding the water and letting it sit for 24 hours and taking a SG reading. Then adding honey to get...

  5. Re: Getting hives up to winter weight question.

So, I'm jumping the gun? I really don't want to feed. When should the fall flow start?
  6. Getting hives up to winter weight question.

I've just checked some of my smaller hives and found that they are light on stores. I've decided that I must feed them to bring them up to winter weight. Will the bees store sugar if I just drop a...

Sherry, how are your bees doing now?
  14. Re: Any reason not to use this as smoker fuel?

I wadded up a sheet of newspaper and shoved it in on top to keep from pouring the pellets into my hive. I'll try the green grass layer next time, I can see that would help cool the smoke more.
  15. Re: Any reason not to use this as smoker fuel?

I'll look for those oak pellets next time I'm there.
  16. Re: Any reason not to use this as smoker fuel?

Thanks for all the replies. I went ahead and used these pellets in my smoker this afternoon. It took a couple of attempts and a few sheets of newspaper to get them going, but once lit they provided a...

  18. Re: How Long for a Queen to Start Laying on New Foudationless?

  19. Re: How Long for a Queen to Start Laying on New Foudationless?

  20. Re: How Long for a Queen to Start Laying on New Foudationless?

I installed 3 packages on April 27th and on my ten day inspections each hive had about frame of capped brood. When I looked again on day 15, each hive has 4 or 5 almost full frames of capped brood...
  21. Re: How Long for a Queen to Start Laying on New Foudationless?

7 days is too early to see any capped brood. Check back around 9 to 10 days and you should see some if the queen began laying right away.
