  1. Re: Newbee-Question regarding how long to feed and top entrance

You'll have to worry with Small Hive Beetles if you give patties at this point. If you do, only give what they can consume within a few days. Which as a new hive, probably not more than about a 1/4...
  2. Re: What temp range and humidity for incubator queen cell finishing?

Janne, you sound just backwards to me. Grafted but haven't used incubators. lol
Have you looked up Lauri's posts about what she does and uses for settings?

The idea behind the use of the...
  3. Re: Newbee-Question regarding how long to feed and top entrance

    Welcome to Beesource!

    1. Feeding 1:1 at this time of year is fine where you're located in TX. Don't try to feed too much at a time. A normal 3# package will consume about 1 quart each day. ...

    Re: Swarm in my chimney

The heat would just kill them out in place and make a mess of the wax comb. Bees don't readily leave the brood. If in your shoes i'd do a trap out and start asap. Lots of info on here about doing...

Re: Did I mess up my split

Don't get too worried at this point. The first thing you should do is think about what you've described to us. You split this colony. Put the queen in one half, and then allowed the other half to...

    Re: Mobile cell incubator kit?

No experience with it, but if I were in the market for one, this device looks like the one I'd grab. Lots of features, coupled with low voltage, and the option to plug into 12v dc. Can't get much...

    Re: Can bees recognize Green?

Ok, So what about white? Is it a normal color they can distinguish without problems? For instance an entrance disk that's painted white on a grey or green box?

Too bad there's none of those bins around here... :( I'd fill my truck bed every day with wood..

    Re: Can bees recognize Green?

Michael - If they see red as black, wouldn't they be able to use it as well as a marker? I've got some mating nuc entrance disks painted red and they seem to do fine with them is why i ask.

Re: How do I limit my hives?

The use of queen excluders and managing for swarms/honey flows is one way to keep them in the boxes. Of course you could make splits each year from them and sell them off. Another way is to cage...

    Re: Painting painting painting

Paint anything that is exposed to the weather. For bottom boards with screens, outside, front porch, under neath. Don't bother with screen as it will cause debris not to fall through and make a...

    Re: eggs vs. swarming

It was always told by the older generation of beekeepers in my area that the egg laying would slow or stop prior to the swarm cells being made due to the queen being put on a diet by the workers. ...
  13. Re: What sliding compound miter saw should I buy?

I'd go with the one with the largest straight cut length. I got one from Harbor Freight, Chicago Electric 10" Sliding compound miter saw that will straight cut up to 3" thick at 12.5". That takes...

Re: Could someone explain "gap" please?

Although the frame rests should be standardized, they aren't exactly. Some mfg's put all the "gap" on the bottom of the box, some split it, and some put it in the top of the box. I've seen all...

Re: Sugar block or pollen patty

Use the granulated sugar on some kind of paper lightly misted so they will eat at it instead of pack it out of the hive. Worse case they turn it to syrup and store it away.

Ian - were you able to see if they had any stores left in the hive? May not need the sugar brick if there's still plenty there. If not, use white sugar lightly misted on wax paper/newspaper on the...

  24. Re: 3 lbs packages , how fast should they take 1:1 feed

Temperature is most likely the key to your question. If the temps are not above 50 F the bees don't feed much. The feed can't be ice cold either. They don't like it.

    I installed two 3# boxes...

    Re: New property ,Hive placement?
