Re: First Split of the year.

Glock, I did something similar with a top bar hive that had tons of cups/cells with eggs brood started last Sunday here in East Berlin Pa. I didn't notice any drones walking around and just one small...

I am going the opposite direction this year Michael.
  3. Re: Best way to split a top bar hive into langstroth deeps

Stan, thanks for your reply, this is the kind of advice I was looking for. This year I do have some ten frame deeps I could split into, so I may try that first and then go to the Nuc boxes if the top...
  4. Re: Best way to split a top bar hive into langstroth deeps

Brian, how do you know what you like, what works for ou unless yu try it? I only have one top bar, it survived this year. I'm just looking for an efficient way(a) to make increase from it to...

Re: Double Nucs, has anyone tried....

Daniel, thanks for do of all the figuring. I have seen people casually throw around they idea of putting two nucs on a standard hive body but as you show, it takes some work. I like the idea of a...
  6. Re: Best way to split a top bar hive into langstroth deeps

I see. My top bars are te same length so I just drop them in. How many bars do you typically take for a split, and are you also splitting into a 5 frame over 5 frame Nuc?
  7. Re: Best way to split a top bar hive into langstroth deeps

Rcol, I might go this route as it will also give the top bar hive new bars, and giver a reason to cull some wonky comb out of the deadouts.

    Pretty much a cut out.
  8. Re: Best way to split a top bar hive into langstroth deeps

Stan, are you saying you kind of make a frame out of the top bar? You cut strips of wood and screw them to the ends of the top bar, then just drop into a Nuc?

    I'm having trouble understanding what...
  9. Best way to split a top bar hive into langstroth deeps

So I have a top bar hive that is doing well, made by Bee Line apiaries. I also have several 5 frame deep Nuc boxes laying around along with a few deadout double deeps (10 frame equipment). I want to...

Brian, wouldn't they draw out some if the other five frames of foundation for the queen to lay in?

    Re: How long?

Yep, sorry misread the comments above regarding Nuc. I'd imagine they are bringing in pollen.

Re: Double Nucs, has anyone tried....

What are the dimensions of two side by side Nuc boxes? I thought they would be wider than a standard 10 frame box or 10 frame excluder.

    Re: How long?

Are the other five frames comb, foundation, plastic or foundation-less? I second making sure the queen has been released. There is definitely pollen available. Wikipedia has a pretty good pollen...

Re: Help with mountain camp vs medium super

I didn't feed sugar syrup, I harvested two medium supers begin in of July. I left a third medium on top of the hive till Christmas, when I added the sugar on top.

This have was booming over the...

Re: Help with mountain camp vs medium super

Lack of hairs on the top of the thorax, different eyes and longer abdomen. I'm no sure how long these have been dead, also, given that I found a capped queen cell, I'm not sure that she was laying,...

Re: Help with mountain camp vs medium super

So I finally checked this hive yesterday... It did not survive. The bees had moved up into the sugar, where they died. The upper deep was empty, besides a few abandoned capped brood, and the lower...

    Re: Box's sticking together

I'd worry about using pledge. I mean I wouldn't clean plates with the stuff, and wouldn't put it near honey that I was going to eat. Could be harmless, but why risk the contaminant?

Re: Starting over with new packages

That all makes sense. Just don't let a mouse get into the hive, and destroy/eat all the comb.

Re: Starting over with new packages

Just use one deep per package, wait until the deep has at least 7 frames covered with either brood or pollen/nectar to add a second deep on top. You could even start in Nuc boxes if you have them...

Re: Sugar syrup in the winter?

I wouldn't feed sugar syrup. Even a 2:1 (sugar to water) mix would add a lot of moisture to a hive. If they seem light to you, consider feeding dry granular sugar or make some sugar bricks up and...
