Re: bees only utilizing top deep

I agree with psfred about feeding 2:1. Last year by late summer one of my colonies (medium over deep) had eaten all stores in the bottom box, leaving nice empty comb. For the next 4 weeks I fed...

    Re: Bees Chase Away Swallows

Wish they would chase wrens. Murderous wrens sit in front of my hives eating innocent bees.

Re: How SWEET is the Mix?

If they have plenty of stores I wouldn't feed. If you believe they need to draw comb feed 1:1. If they are using up stores and they have drawn empty comb feed 2:1 so they will fill up the empty...

    Re: Queen-less hive......what do i do?

Sounds like a plan! I am in the waiting game AGAIN with a NUC I started 3 in May. I thought I had a queen cell 1-1/2 months ago, and then found the hive queenless late in July. I pulled a frame...

Re: First Year with removed Feral Hive

I agree with Gary except for the Question 6. I have SBB's, but close most of mine, even during the summer. With the SBB closed your new queen may start laying in the lower deep due to less draft...

Re: Barely any honey in hive

If you have fully drawn empty combs, you may want to feed THAT hive 2:1. They will store that in the empty combs.

    Re: YES!!!!

COOL! I am in my third year of bee-keeping. The first 2 years I never could spot an egg. This year with the light right (mid-morning on a clear day) I have been able to see eggs (oh and also...
  9. Re: Should I add anything to my bee water.

+1. I would be very careful about adding anything to your water source. A separate salt pile like Hops described would be safer. My 2 cents.

    Re: Customer concern

Maybe you can make them someone ELSE's customer.

Ten or so years ago I read a story about an up-and-coming airline. Seems like they had a customer who had a complaint that the normal channels...

    Re: Customer concern

It seems obvious that you did not care to read BMAC's post. He explained to the lady that he did not believe that the FAIR was the forum to conduct this discussion.

    Re: swarm today in MD

Nice catch. You were kind of lucky to see that queen.

    Yeah, we're in a dearth.

I have seen that behavior on one of my hives. Nice catch!
  14. Re: safe procedure for shaking out 2 hives

I would definitely NOT do a combine of these bees with any healthy hive.

I did a shake-out this year of a four-box colony which was a laying-workers colony. I moved all 4 boxes with frames about...

Re: Newby and smoke and mean bees ...

You might be in a dearth (no nectar out there). Bees can be pretty cranky late summer. If you need the to draw comb and you don't see any drawn, you might neet to feed with 1:1.

Good advice! Also, try smoking the entrance(s), then lift the cover and puff a small amount of smoke in and put the replace the cover. Then wait for about 1 minute. ...

I haven't seen any recently, but in April and May I saw a lot of them. I don't know of anything negative except I don't like earwigs.

    1. Use foundationless frames, particularly on the outside of the group of frames, and particularly when the hive is weak (not full of bees). Then when there is no comb there is no place for the...

    Re: Feeding 2:1 Sugar Mix

    Re: Sugar Water Recipe

Granulated sugar is 2-1/4 cups per pound; Water is 2 cups per pound. You can choose to do it by weight or by volume.

  24. Re: beetle blaster, never sits flat, creates more problems

I bought a bunch of beetle blasters a couple of years ago when one of the hives had 2 frames with stores slimed by the SHB larva. We put 2 or more traps in each box, spending quite a bit of time...

    Re: Poo Yaah They MAD...

6 pm not the best time to go in. Better to go in around 8 to 10 am. Not as hot. On a hot humid afernoon they can get rather cranky.
