Re: How to clean an extractor

I'd re-house the old extractor in another drum. I was in the process of doing this when I got offered a cheap plastic extractor.

Re: How to clean an extractor

I used to clean my old one with boiling water.

I stored it by draping two layers of bedsheet over it and tying around it with cord.

Now I have a plastic one, with a lid.

    Re: Swarm Prevention Management

Yes, here we can easily winter in single deeps, or even nucs.

I only have a handful of hives, and keep experimenting.

I have found that the single deeps need more intervention in spring or...

    Re: Swarm Prevention Management

Matt, I enjoyed your description and reading your website.

My bees are near the QLD / NSW border so it's significantly warmer than VIC. It's good to hear that putting new frames beside the brood...

    Re: Swarm Prevention Management

This year I had no swarms (it's the middle of summer at the moment)

I am experimenting every year, but these are the things that I've found to work.

    1. Splitting

    2. Making room for the...

Re: Possible Negative Points of Three Deep Hives

I am keenly following this thread as I too am experimenting with large hives.

My situation is a little different as here in Australia (I am near the QLD / NSW border) the bees continue to raise...

Re: Do bees waggle dance about pollen sources?

So the waggle dance is to point to the direction of the source in relation to the sun, correct? And I think distance is included in the dance too?

So will bees coming home with either nectar,...
  8. Re: Does mango produce much nectar? (south florida mango grove)

We have a mango orchard here and a commercial one very close as well.
I've never seen bees on mango flowers. Often the mangoes bloom as the rains come and the rain knocks off a lot of the flowers...

Re: Entrance location and the Brood nest location

All my hives have entrances at the top and bottom, and I've only seen the bees using the bottom entrances - except when they're cranky, then they'll fly out the top entrance to sting. They patrol and...

Re: Do bees waggle dance about pollen sources?

Does anybody know if or how they distinguish between what they are locating in their communications?
  11. Re: Has anyone ever had dead bees to block their hive entrance?

Not a strong hive, but I made up a five frame nuc from two separate colonies, and they fought like mad. Dead bees piled up outside within an hour or two, and then blocked the entrance by the next...

    Re: Hive About to Swarm?

I watched two swarms issue this spring. Neither of them did that. Also saw a swarm that went out of the hive, swirled around, then went back in.

    Speaking as a beginner myself;

Telling them how easy it is to raise an emergency queen, and the difficulties involved (wrong season?)
Telling them they could combine that queenless colony with...

Re: Just killed 20 Queen Cells: Now What?

    I don't know your location or seasons, but what about an artificial swarm;

Queen in new box, move old boxes away, shake bees in front of new hive. Either leave old colony with one queen cell, or...
